Who's the "bear?"

Greetings, I'm finally getting around to my first posting here since we escaped from the clutches of Yahoo! It's been a very busy spring for me.

I'm curious about a phrase that's popped up in three dance tunes I've spun recently (Ella, Roy Milton, Cats & the Fiddle, all late '40s/early '50s). The phrase is some variation of: "You're just like the bear, you ain't nowhere."

Can anyone provide a cultural or historical context to this expression? Who's the "bear," and why is he being dissed? Thanks.

Jim W

PS - I'll submit an avatar of myself when I find one that doesn't suck.
