Hi there! I'm new to this forum, so I'll be brief. I'm trying to grow my swing collection, but I'm not sure where or with whom to start. I have a few CDs, but i need more. If anyone can tell me what CDs to are good to buy, or versions of songs to avoid, or whatever, the help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Also, in addition to a general swing collection, I'm also looking for a couple specific songs that I don't know the Name/performer thereof. If anyane can help me out with this, I'd be very grateful.

Well, the Sax intro comes from the title "Deacon's Hop" by Big Jay McNeely & Band

Please pay attention, that the sax will get (for my taste) very obtrusive and bothering in the course of this track. I would not play that track during a dance night.

You'll find that most of the "Swinging Music" section of this site is about what CDs are good to buy and what to avoid. A look back thru previous topics will yield lots of great recommendations. You just have to be wary that people have different tastes, so what works for one DJ may not work for another.

This is "Hand Clappin'" by Red Prysock, easily found on his Swingsation compilation.

and I think that Stompy Jones might lay down this track for their new album if they ever make one

They've tried to record it but haven't been happy with their studio takes. It's very hard to get that live energy in the studio, especially with their high production standards.

That and the song sucks.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but off the top of my head I believe the Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra played "For Dancers Only" (originally performed by Jimmie Lunceford's orchestra) in the medium-tempo finals at ULHS 2005.

I should add that to the readme file one of these days.

It stuns me that of the top 20 CDs mentioned on that site, there's only one classic swing era recording. Granted it's Chick Webb, but not including Old Testament Basie ... while including a Hammond B3 organist?

I read your disclaimer at the top, yes, yes, but is sound quality such a huge issue that OT Basie would be immediately disqualified?

Before you characterize me as a fast-dancing, old-swing-music-only kind of guy, remember that I attended Lindygroove religiously for four years.

I do think sound quality is that big of an issue (music is an audible experience, as opposed to an academic or historical experience), but I admit that you do have a good point. A previous incantation had Benny Goodman/Les Brown-like Swing Era pop crap, which I eliminated from the list and didn't replace with other vintage music. I already have two or three Basie, which "eliminated" the Complete Decca set. However, I always meant to update the list with a few more classic recommendations, but I just haven't done so yet.

I also wanted to give my list some level of uniqueness and spread the word on Earland, which explains the B3 recommendation.

The Big 18 is not on the list for the reason you noted: out of print.
