Hi there! I'm new to this forum, so I'll be brief. I'm trying to grow my swing collection, but I'm not sure where or with whom to start. I have a few CDs, but i need more. If anyone can tell me what CDs to are good to buy, or versions of songs to avoid, or whatever, the help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Also, in addition to a general swing collection, I'm also looking for a couple specific songs that I don't know the Name/performer thereof. If anyane can help me out with this, I'd be very grateful.

*This is the all skate part two of pcbf.

*This is "All of me", but i don't know who performs it.

"This one's pretty big, so it may take a few minutes. It's the medium final to ULHS 2005.

*I'm interested in the Sax intro to this one. The second part of the song is Carioca. Kevin and Carla's routine song.

Thanks again!!!

Well, the Sax intro comes from the title "Deacon's Hop" by Big Jay McNeely & Band

I've got this track on two different CDs:

1949 - Blowing the Fuse: 27 R&B Classics That Rocked the Jukebox
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00061 ... 1142865806
Jump, Jive & Swing (Various Artists)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000 ... 1142865920

Please pay attention, that the sax will get (for my taste) very obtrusive and bothering in the course of this track. I would not play that track during a dance night.

You'll find that most of the "Swinging Music" section of this site is about what CDs are good to buy and what to avoid. A look back thru previous topics will yield lots of great recommendations. You just have to be wary that people have different tastes, so what works for one DJ may not work for another.

This is "Hand Clappin'" by Red Prysock, easily found on his Swingsation compilation.

are there any other places to find a copy of "Hand Clappin'"?

and I think that Stompy Jones might lay down this track for their new album if they ever make one

They've tried to record it but haven't been happy with their studio takes. It's very hard to get that live energy in the studio, especially with their high production standards.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but off the top of my head I believe the Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra played "For Dancers Only" (originally performed by Jimmie Lunceford's orchestra) in the medium-tempo finals at ULHS 2005.

I should add that to the readme file one of these days.

It stuns me that of the top 20 CDs mentioned on that site, there's only one classic swing era recording. Granted it's Chick Webb, but not including Old Testament Basie ... while including a Hammond B3 organist?

I read your disclaimer at the top, yes, yes, but is sound quality such a huge issue that OT Basie would be immediately disqualified?

Before you characterize me as a fast-dancing, old-swing-music-only kind of guy, remember that I attended Lindygroove religiously for four years.

Just for fun, I'll include twenty CDs (none are essential) off the top of my head. Proper box 4-cd sets will count as 2 CDs since they cost about what two ordinary CDs would.

1) Chick Webb Proper Box
3) Count Basie Proper Box
5) Duke Ellington Proper Box
7) Night Train by Oscar Peterson
8) The Very Best of Ray Charles
9) Tribute to Andy Razaf, Maxine Sullivan
10) Dance Parade/Your Dance Date, Harry James
11) Echoes of the Big Bands, The Big 18 (out of print)
12) Live at the 9:20 Special, Barbara Morrison
13) Swingin' the Century, Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra
14) The Essential Louis Armstrong (2 cds)
16) One Hour Mama, Lavay Smith
17) The Complete Gramercy Five Sessions, Artie Shaw
18) Hollywood Jump, Eddie Reed Orchestra
19) The Joint is Jumpin', Fats Waller
20) Add your own.

I do think sound quality is that big of an issue (music is an audible experience, as opposed to an academic or historical experience), but I admit that you do have a good point. A previous incantation had Benny Goodman/Les Brown-like Swing Era pop crap, which I eliminated from the list and didn't replace with other vintage music. I already have two or three Basie, which "eliminated" the Complete Decca set. However, I always meant to update the list with a few more classic recommendations, but I just haven't done so yet.

I also wanted to give my list some level of uniqueness and spread the word on Earland, which explains the B3 recommendation.

The Big 18 is not on the list for the reason you noted: out of print.

Good to hear. (The site was down when I posted.)
