Barnet is buggin me

#1 Post by Choc Wheaton » Tue Jan 31, 2006 11:30 pm

I'm getting totally frustrated at trying to find some quality Charlie Barnet. Seems to be a lot of rubbish out there.... I have Leapin' at the Lincoln and while the cuts are great, the quality is not so hot.

Can anyone make some recommendations? I'm particularly looking for a hot arrangement of King Porter Stomp. I have the track but want to know which album it's from.

Trev, did you get your gear from World Records yet? I'm thinking of using them and want to know what they're like with getting stuff to Oz.

As far as I'm aware there are no good quality 30s/40s Charlie Barnet releases out there. (If you are a record company reading this, get on it! :) )

There are some well remastered releases of his bebop band, his 50s band, and a live 40s performance, but they are not really his best stuff.

As for Worlds Records - yes I have my order - it took just under 2 weeks to arrive, and I'd be happy to use them again.

Here is another thread on Charlie Barnet link

With some quick internet searches for Charlie Barnet having a recording of King porter stomp, I'm not able to find one (thats not saying it's not out there.).
There is a Swingsation Album link of Charlie Barnet and Jimmy Dorsey that has a very nice version of King port stomp. I'm not sure if the info you got may have been mixed up or something.

I'm guessing the version you're looking for is by Jimmy Dorsey.

I think you are right. The only king porter stomp allmusic lists that is associated with Barnet is the one from Swingsation which was performed by Dorsey. I think that version is the same as the one on Dorsey's Contrasts album.

How about geting some of the old RCA Vintage LPs which had great sound and burnihg your own CDs?

I have 2 of them for sale and they cover the 1939 - 1942 period - all from Bluebird when his band was at it's zenith.
Will big bands ever come back?

I like the ASV (Living Era?) collection.

I don't have much by him, so I can't really judge quality.

All the other Barnet reissues are dubs of earlier LPs or 78s....except the old Victor Vintage series. They had 2 LPs of choice Barnet material.

If someone wants the 2 I have for sale, it will cost you 12 bucks and I will pay the postage to anywhere in the USA.

Each LP has 16 tracks on it.

Want 'em? Pay the 12 bucks into my PayPal account - swingking@earthlink.net

Simple as at.

Yeah, you're all correct, it IS the Dorsey version off Swingsation. My mistake.... dumb-ass me

Brian, I'll speak to Russell about the Quad set and see if it's any good.

Alex, I love Hep stuff so will definitely pick up the Transcriptions CD. Thanks for the tip.

Trev, World Records has some sweet gear and if they're as quick as you say, then my wallet is going to take a pants-down spankin'....

Cheers

Chocko

Choco,
I will try to remember to bring the Quadromania set down to Melbourne for the Hotshots if you are around. I haven't gone through it yet to give an opinion.
Regarding World Records - coincidentally just recoeved notice that my first order from them has been shipped. I waited awhile for it but it is a new release of a CD of International Sweethearts of Rhythm material. Will see how long it takes to get here.
Also picked up the Charlie Barnet LPs from eyeball - looking forward to checking those out.

For sound quality, check out the 1958 album Cherokee on the Bluebird label ...

It has some slower numbers you might like.

I usued to have that LP and it was on the old Everest label...which now may have been acquired by RCA.

Honestly, I didn't like it even for listening. It was very '50s' and just kind of loud and undisciplined....nothing like his 1939 - 1942 sides.

I have not heard it in years b/c I don't think I kept it.

Post 40s Barnet recordings are 'problematic'. I have never come across an LP by him that I really liked.

OTOH - I can highly recommend his live 1947 Town Hall Concert recording that was issued on Columbia. I dont know if it is on CD. The live version of "Skyliner" that has been re-issued a zillion times if rom the THConcert.
