If you ever get a chance to hear Paul Smith (83 years old) play, do it. He has the technique and virtuosity of Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson but without the little problems like, oh, being dead or partial paralysis from a stroke. You won't necessarily get up and dance, but your jaw will get bruised from repeatedly bouncing off the floor.
This guy is amazing. He is a complete master of dynamics, tempo, timing, and rhythmic nuance. He can play bop, swing, stride, pop, latin, anything you want at the drop of a hat, and often switches things up mid-song -- and he quotes from other music like a FIEND, which makes it fun for trainspotters like us.
