Cool modern band combo's

#1 Post by JSAlmonte » Mon Oct 31, 2005 5:38 pm

Some of you may have had the opportunity to hear The Boilermaker Jazz Band play with George Gee's Jump, Jive & Wailers in NYC, DC, or North Carolina. I can't speak for NYC or NC, but it was a great night of music in DC.

It got me to thinking: what other combination of bands or personel currently playing would you like to hear play together.

To make this challenging, I'd like to limit this to anyone that has played at a Lindy event in the past 10 years or so. I think it's safe to sat that we all would like to hear Count Basie jam with Chick Webb, but I'd like to hear what possibilities exist out there now.

Personally, I've been itching to hear Jonathan Stout's Campus Five and the Boilermakers together ever since they mentioned it on yehoodi awhile ago.

I'd also like to hear Mora's Modern Rhythmists battle against Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings from Ann Arbor, MI or Vince Giordano's Nighthawks.

I know we got a glimpse of it at Y6A, but I'd also like to hear Barbara Morrison in front of a big band like the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra.

Any other ideas?

I would actually love to perform with Evan and Duke. I know them well and played with them many times in New Orleans and California at Jazz Festivals.

I think you and Evan jamming together would make me pull a mousethief (see above).

I'd like to hear Solomon Douglas' swingtet (seattle band members) and Jonathan Stout's orchestra. Solomon's swingtet has played here several times this year, they keep getting better, and they have a guitar player who specializes in rhythm guitar. And Solomon's charts are great.

Looking forward to hearing Jonathan's band again in San Diego; I really enjoyed them last year. It's great dancing lindy hop to a real big band; no disrespect to the combo leaders out there, I love them, but big bands with authentic charts are the bomb to dance to.

There are so many good musicians around, you wish you were as rich as Bill Gates so you could have a month long festival where you can bring all the musicians together to jam and party. But I'd settle if I can make the next Crystal City Jazz Festival where the last lineup included:

Jimmy "T-99" Nelson - (Vocals)
Dan Barrett - (Trombone)
Tommy Cecil - (Bass)
James Chirillo - (Guitarist)
John Cocuzzi - (Vibraphone, Piano and Vocals)
Frank Cocuzzi - (Drums & Vocals)
Leonard Cuddy - (Drums)
Ron Diehl - (Woodwind Artist)
Eric Felten - (Singer and Trombonist )
Tim Ford - (Vocalist, Pianist, and Bandleader)
Adam Friedman - (Upright Bass)
Clyde E. Hunt - (Trumpet)
John Jensen - (Trombone)
Big Joe Maher - (Drums & Vocals)
Vince McCool - (Trumpet & Flugelhorn)
Houston Person - (Tenor Saxophonist)
Ed Polcer - (Cornet & Vocals)
John Previti - (Upright Bass)
Robert Redd - (Pianist)
John Sheridan - (Piano)
Joe Stanley - (Saxophonist)
Bruce Swaim - (Saxophone and Flute)
The Capital Focus Jazz Band
Allan Vaché - (Clarinet)

Ernestine Anderson and Barbara Morrison

There are others out there, but it's hard to think of great combinations...Going to see Jonathan Stout & His Campus Five live for the first time tomorrow night @ the Doghouse in SF. Woo Hoo!
