Hi Juani,

There is a load, and here is some of my favorite at the moment. All are between 180 and 280 BMP, and any of the new recordings are good re-recordings of originals. There are many other threads on this board about this topic, so make sure you have a look.
If you want some really nice performance or just simple stuff, start with Sidney Bechet.

"Melancholy Lou" - Howard Lanin's Orchestra
"Charleston" - Paul Whiteman (no brainer)
"Shake That Thing!" - Abe Lyman's California Orchestra
"I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" - Ray Miller & His Hotel Gibson Orchestra
"Mama's Gone, Goodbye" - Thelma Terry & Her Playboys
"Voice of the Southland" - Thelma Terry & Her Playboys
"Charleston Back To Charleston' - The Coon-Sanders Nighthawks
"Black Bottom" - Johnny Hamp's Kentucky Serenaders

Bands that played bargeloads of good Charleston -

Ben Selvin
The Coon - Sanders Nighthawks
Irving Aaronson and His Commanders
Ben Bernie's Hotel Roosevelt Orch.
Frankie Trumbauer

And a few I can't think of right now....

Ok, so I may be involved in a project that may contain Charleston dancing.

Because of this, I would like to set guidelines for myself to what is Traditional music the Charleston dance is danced to. I’m trying to be little loose on it, but I would be interested in your thoughts and views?

Traditional music to dance Charleston to:

“A music mainly in a 2/4 timing (sometimes 4/4), which is routed in the early 1920’s Chicago jazz style. It often contains a Tuba and Banjo as well as a standard traditional jazz ensemble (Horns, Reeds, Piano and Percussion). It is generally an up-tempo, upbeat, staccato, steady rhythm music with basic harmonies, improvisation and solos.”

This is not trying to be a definition, but more of a generalisation.

Hi Brian, To help with your defintion, the actual Charleston itself is in "alla breve' time, usually represented on the stave as a c with a vertical line through it. It means 2/2. In fact, most swing is in 2/2. 2/4 was pretty old hat in the jazz age. Some songs are 4/4 like Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, the Very Thought of You and Carolina in the Morning! The other unusual and significant thing about the actual Charleston song, and the Charleston feel, as I understand it as a musician when I play it at gigs, is that each bar either has a quaver or crotchet rest on the first beat, or a quaver rest at the beginning of the second beat - gives it that stop-start feel. Hope this helps, Cheers! Greg

Hi,
I only vaguely know what I'm looking for, but I'll try anyway...

20s Charleston instrumental pieces in minor keys, not necessarily from the 20s, could be modern, quasi 20s style, almost clichés that instantly remind of the movies set in the 20s. (Maybe not even Charleston per se, but Balboa, but definitely in 2/2.)
I keep hearing a couple of similar songs at dance schools performances but I can never get the titles.
Thanks

Charleston in minor key

I'm no expert Maddy, but I think you might find some klezmer music fun to dance to, & some in minor key. Find a copy of "Give it up" (Gypsy second line) by Dr. Michael White. It's six minutes long.

I actually have not listened to this yet. But, when I saw it show up on the Blog Aggregator, I thought it was worth sharing the link, being Klezmer and Yiddish Swing and all.

nickel nickel nickel nickle

hey all,
feeling low key these past couple weeks...thought i would post these tracks today. I've been enjoying this record of folk music from Siberia, it's pretty good, there few tracks of vocal duets by two ladies named Irina Khristoforovna and Anna Vasilevna Kolegova that are real interesting. So check them out if you like, the record is called Kamtchatka. I told crish that i was blogging today and he told me to add these tracks from an old Yazoo release on the Jewish clarinet player, Dave Tarras. Pretty cool stuff. The record is called Yiddish-American Klezmer Music - 1925-1956, there are alot of cool radio broadcast performances on it..like the three crish is posting....cool.
