I’m interested in finding out how many good early 30’s style jazz bands that are out there. It’s the “Mora’s Modern Rhythmists” sounding "style" type band.
We have a really fantastic one in Melbourne, called the Cairo Club Link.
They have a CD out now, which is really fantastic. The sound engineering is not up to the unbelievable high quality of Mora’s recordings but they are not to far off.
Do you know of any other bands like these?

I have a CD from "The Bluebird Society Orchestra", called "Music of High Society" that has a lot of Mora style/sounding music on it. The CD itself is fairly old (1986), and probably really hard to find. But it's good

i'm not familar with mmr... but... how about the Boilermakers from Pittsburgh? ...then again, maybe they're more late thirties...

Sounds like he's thinking of a big band versus a small band. Considering a big band is only a tiny bit bigger than a small one in that period, the main difference is adlibs versus arrangements ala Fletcher Henderson.

Gus Ramos' Blue Rhythm Orchestra in another one out here. But, they were sort of Mora-lite, because they played a lot of the same exact charts and not as well. Still, not bad.

There is also the Johnny Crawford Dance Orchestra. Quite frankly, I haven't heard any band pull off that stereotypical early 30's "movie" sound better then they do.

Careful though, I don't think the albums on there are of his "dance orchestra." There is a clip of the dance orchestra stuff on the "music and images" page.

If you like that Nighthawks album you will probably like another two records I've mentioned on this board featuring Peter Ecklund (he's on cornet on the Nighthawks record) - Ecklund at Elkhart & The Orphan Newsboys at the Lafayette Club.
