Does anyone have any of these CDs? If you do, can you comment if they are worth buying and for the lo-fi stuff if it has decent sound quality.

I ask because one of Chicago's favorite musicians Franz Jackson who is still going strong at 92 is a musician on all of those CDs I'm thinking of picking a few of them up.

Besises the 10 or so CD's under his own name he also appears on these(which I do have):

I don't know which "Piano Man" release you are referring to (there are three different such compilations with 'Fatha' according to www.allmusic.com).

I bought "Piano Man 1928-1955" [Giants of Jazz #53118] at a sale here in town two days ago just to get "Grand Terrace Shuffle" and "G.T. Stomp" (from 1939), but found out there were other great tunes as well, most notably "Angry" (1934), "Number 19" (1940), "Up Jumped the Devil" and "Windy City Jive" (1941), and "Second Balcony Jump" (1942).

But 'nuff blabbering, to your questions:

Said CD contains only one side with Franz Jackson on tenor, the mentioned "Up Jumped the Devil", but it's really good. Combined with the other tunes it's a good buy considering it doesn't overlap your chrono classics (1939-1940 and 1942-1945 or 1945-1947) all that much. Sound quality is quite alright, nothing exceptional but not really bad either.

Henderson's "Study in Frustration" = vital

The Roy Eldridge Proper you have on your list there, Little Jazz Trumpet Giant, isn't too bad, it'll probably cover most of everything that's on those other Eldridge CDs too.

Dud and Paul Bascomb;1945-1947 - Good sound quality, worth getting...these guys played with Erskine Hawkins...

Fletcher Henderson; A study of frustration - Best Sound Quality for Fletch, great booklet too

Roy Eldridge;Chronological Classic 1935-1940 - I don't recommend this, the sound quality is real poor, even for Classics, get Hecklers Hop on Hep instead, it covers roughly the same period
