On the Sunny Side of the Street

This is another one of those songs that I love all versions. Anyway I know this girl who lives on Sunnyside street in Chicago, she's a non dancer jazz fan who hangs out at the Green Mill Lounge. On her message recording she has this song on her recording. She didn't believe me when I told her I had at least 10 versions of the song. I went home and checked my hard drive and I have 15 versions on my hard drive, probably more on CD's that I haven't loaded yet. So, I decieded I would burn them all and give them to her for next time she wants to record a message.

The 15 versions I know I have are:

Jay McShann; Duke Robilland
Louis Armstong
Lionel Hampton
Count Basie; Milt Jackson
Dizzie Gillespie; Joe Carroll
Yoko Noge
Cozy Cole
Franz Jackson
McShann's Kaycee Stompers
Joe Carroll
Kermit Ruffins
Oscar Peterson trio; Lester Young
Harry Connick Jr
Tommy Dorsey
Karen Capo

Surprisingly I don't have an Ella version because that's a version she has on her recording.

My favorite version is McShann's Kaycee Stompers from 1944.

How many versions of this song do you have? and what's your favorite?

I love that song. I've got around 10 versions, including the Ella version with Basie, from the CD that's titled after the song. My favorite is either Duke Heitger's version from his CD, Rhythm Is Our Business, or a Billie Holiday version I have.

Has anybody seen the Far Side cartoon about that song?

I just love the Goodman / Lee version,
Album: Peggy Lee & Benny Goodman: The Complete Recordings 1941-1947
Recorded on the 24th Dec 41 arranged by Mel Powell.
To me it just shows off the fantastic talent that Benny had on Clarinet and Peggy's vocal control is just fantastic. It's probably my favourite recording Lee with the Goodman Band in the early 40's.

The song it self came from a Broadway musical called International Revue and was a Jones Francis McHugh, Dorothy Fields composition.

I also really like the Ella and Basie 15/07/1963 recording at A&R Studios, New York City - Count Basie Orchestra backing - Arrangement by Quincy Jones.

I also have Roy Milton, Chick Web (2 recordings) Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Tom Cunningham, Louis Prima, Jay McShann and Tommy Dorsey doing it.

I picked up the Helen Hume's CD of the same name in New Orleans. It's a fun little live version with Buddy Tate on Sax and Jay McShann on Piano

I love dancing to the Dizzy Gillepsie version - anyone know who sings on it? Sounds like two or three people.

I also like the version on Ernestine's new CD Love Makes the Changes.

i indeed love this song. it's a lot of fun to sing. there's a lot of open "space" in the melody and lyrics for screwing around with the words & rhythms and stuff.

In the movie "Tap" with Gregory Hines one of the old guys does a great version of Sunny Side of the Street. The movie has a soundtrack out but I can't find a track listing for it (yet).

There is a really great 1957 blue version by Sidney Bechet off the Jazz at Storyville album. Even if you never DJ it, listen to it.
