So how many Count Basie cds / records do you have? Not counting where he appears on a compilation or on another musician's cd.Also not counting his time playing with Benny Moten or other groups he was in.I just counted +or - 300 different titles in Gold Mine guide to jazz .

What Rayned said, +/- a few (I don't really have my music organized enough right now to quickly list which ones). Count Basie is my favorite swinging artist after all! I guess I have a long way to go to get his complete recordings, according to the "Gold Mine guide to jazz". ;)

Are those 300 unduplicated recordings? Even with that it's still less than what it would take to collect Ellington. For example, the Basie Complete RCA-Victor is just 3 discs, whereas the Ellington Complete RCA-Victor is 24 discs.

Amen to that. If you want to talk about output, Ellington is your man. Especially with all those live recordings. There are Ellington freaks out there that are even nerdier than us (lol). I was at the house of the dude who's over 80 and still puts together the Duke Ellington Society monthly newsletter. He had about 400-500 Ellington cds, and and probably about two thousand Ellington LPs that he's been collecting his whole life. It was quite humbling to look through his entire collection...

That's a great book. Albert Murray did an excellent job writing it.

I have well over 100 Basie CDs in a three-inch-thick CD binder containing nothing but Armstrong (15%) and Basie (85%), including the two Mosaic Complete Roulette sets, three or four live shows on video, and several post-humous CDs. Still a long way to go to be complete, though.

I once had a goal of collecting everything in print, but I pretty much gave up because I long ago I reached the point of diminishing returns. Plus, I decided to instead focus more intensely on developing my Westie collection of 1970s Disco and late-1990s R&B.

Interesting idea.

I just did a quick check and was surprised to find I have around 35 CDs with Basie.

For dancing the best in my collection is the marvelous 10 CD set from Past Perfect. I found this a half price books for around $20-$25. I would guess at least 50-75% of the tracks are good for swing dancing.

For listening I much prefer the 50's-70s Basie big bands. Has much more varied arranging.

Somewhere around 20. I prefer the old stuff for dancing, and I've put my money into that, although some of the New Testament stuff has been growing on me. Just played "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall" (Basie/Ella) tonight, in fact.
