Phantom Dancer Tues 1 Nov and Sat 5 Nov

#331 Post by phantom dancer » Sun Oct 30, 2011 4:27 pm

Hello Phantom Dancers,

Here’s the Phantom Dancer radio show play list for Tues 1 Nov at 12 noon and Sat 5 Nov from 6pm (+11 GMT)

You’ll note that The Phantom Dancer is a Melbourne Cup-free hour and a half. What a relief!

This week’s highlights include 2 Django Reinhardt broadcasts from Paris in the 1940s and a set of very early radio music from 1929 – 1931

And here’s the Phantom Dancer video of the week, road safety with the Don. Don Bradman, that is. He’s a cricketing legend. But the star of this film is 1948 Sydney. Most of the short is filmed at Bondi Beach. The kids running out from school across the road are from Bondi Beach Primary. The 409 bus was one I used to catch. It ran from Ashfield Station to Rookwood Cemetery. Enjoy!

Jim Davidson from Sydney in 1933, Jam Session No. 4 from Paris in 1946 and the Trio Lescano from Rome in 1940 – they’re just some of the great commercially released swing and jazz – plus all the live 1920s-1960s radio swing and jazz you hear every week - on the this Tuesday’s and Saturday’s Phantom Dancer

Plus amazing trombone from a 1950s Spike Jones TV show. Watch clip and see the full play list at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2011 ... umble-bee/

The Phantom Dancer has been on 107.3 2SER-FM since 1985. I’m happy to say I can still find fresh 1920s-60s radio & TV swing and jazz for your listening delectation and dancing pleasure twice every week. For example, the 1945 hit Sentimental Journey on this week’s show is a doozey sung by Metropolitan Opera Star, Lawrence Tibbett, and Hot Lips Page really swings in the modern way on Good For Stompin’

And of course, there’s always the Phantom Dancer Video of the Week for your viewing enjoyment. This week – two very short ‘Food Flashes’ from WWII. Be patient for the punch line. It’s ‘cute’

You can see the full Phantom Dancer play list for Tuesday 15 November and Saturday 19 November on the Radio Lounge link below, with times, station and links to live-streaming

Happy Listening

Demolition Reveals 1911 Wall Ad

#335 Post by phantom dancer » Mon Nov 28, 2011 5:48 am

This Tuesday’s and Saturday’s Phantom Dancer features Spotlight Bands’ ‘Band of the Week’ for 31 January 1942, Sammy Kaye, over the Blue Network. And his best selling record that got him the ‘Band of the Week’ gig? A tune called ‘Remember Pearl Harbour’. Turns out NBC interrupted a Sammy Kaye program to break the news of Pearl Harbour being bombed, 7 December 1941. Hence the message song. And like all message songs, well, ahem, you be the judge

See the full play list for this week’s Phantom Dancer after these exciting pics

That’s right, photos. Instead of a Video of the Week, I’m posting some exciting archeological photos I took just a few hours ago.

There was a fire near me recently. A dry cleaners burnt to the ground. The building has been demolished. And behind a demolished doubled wall a well-preserved painted advertisement has been revealed

I guessed by the artwork and fonts that the ad was from 1911. A quick look at the Sands Directory tells me I’m about right

Read more. See the photos. See the Phantom Dancer play list for 29 Nov and 3 Dec 2011 at http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/840/

As 2011 draws to a close, The Phantom Dancer will be right there with you with a program of live New Years jazz and swing from 1940s-60s radio
Tune into 107.3 2SER Sydney on Tuesday 27 December at 12 noon and New Year’s Eve, Saturday 31 December at 6pm (+11 GMT) for music to get you into the swing for 2012

Live stream http://www.2ser.com/stream

Check out the play list on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog Link below where you'll also see this Week’s Video of the Week

Video of the Week: ‘Ridin’ Hi’ - a rare 15 minute radio show promoting Bike Riding for ‘Health & Happiness’ from New York’s WJZ radio in 1937. The orchestra is directed by Frank Sinatra’s Uncle Ray. The singer is Jane Froman, one of the top female pop vocalists of the late 1930s

For myself and all the Greg Poppleton Bakelite Jazz Band, we wish you a happy, healthy and successful 2012. And if you’ve never ridden a bike before, maybe this week’s Video of the Week vintage swing radio show will inspire you to get ‘Ridin’ Hi’…

Larry Clinton & Barbara James

Phantom Dancer Highlights, 12 Noon Tues 10 Jan & 6pm Sat 14 Jan

Another great show for you of live 1920s – 60s radio swing and jazz this Tuesday and Saturday on 2SER Sydney

Highlights include Larry Clinton & the Orchestra playing for RCA in 1938. The Clinton band was put together to spruik on NBC for RCA, sort of an early form of The Monkees, if you will. And from 1960s Sydney radio there’s a 15 minute program of songs for you by Barbara James & her husband, pianist and band leader, Reg Lewis. Both were big in the
Australian jazz and swing scene from the late 1920s into the early 60s

Phantom Dancer Highlights 12noon Tues 17 Jan Sat 21 Jan

How organised? A set of 1930s live radio bands, a set of 1940s live radio bands and a set of 1930s-40s Australian radio bands this week, including a live concert piece by Peter Dawson from 1ZB Auckland in 1942. Yeah, I know, he’s not swing and jazz, (and Auckland isn’t in Australia), but you'll still hear lots of live 1930s-60s swing and jazz on the other 86 minutes of the Phantom Dancer with radio performances by Red Nichols, Larry Clinton, Gene Krupa, Jan Garber and more

’ll also be playing another Don Redman record, following on from last week’s airing of ‘How’m I Doin’?’. This week’s Don Redman is ‘I Heard’ from 1931 and ties in nicely with this week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week where Don & the Orchestra plays the same song in a film-animation Betty Boop cartoon, coincidentally entitled ‘I Heard’

So boop, boop-a-doop, here ’tis…http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012 ... p-i-heard/

Vale Johnny Otis & Etta James

#344 Post by phantom dancer » Mon Jan 23, 2012 5:03 am

Greetings Bakeliters!

Vale Etta James and band leader Johnny Otis, the man who just happened to 'discover' Ms James in the 1950s. You'll hear Johnny Otis live from a 1945 'Jubilee' broadcast and Etta James live singing a song Johnny Otis co-wrote 'Roll With Me, Henry' at the end of this Tuesday's and this Saturday's Phantom Dancer. And check out Johnny Otis live on 1950s TV with the Three Tons of Joy in this week's Phantom Dancer Video of the Week

And there's lots of live 1930s-60s radio jazz and swing for you, too, including three Alastair Cooke jazz jam session excerpts broadcast from the BBC in the 1930s and 40s. Check out the play list on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012 ... hnny-otis/

Silvertown Orch, Boswell Sisters, Betty Boop

#345 Post by phantom dancer » Sun Jan 29, 2012 3:27 am

Salutations Bakeliters!

Well, The Phantom Dancer (2SER 107.3 Sydney Tuesday 12 noon and Saturday 6pm (+11h GMT)) has a few delectable swing radio rarities for you this week. Live stream: http://www.2ser.com/stream

First off, I never knew swing gospel singer and guitarist, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, sang with the Erskine Hawkins' Orchestra. But she did, on-air, in 1943, and you'll hear it this Tuesday and Saturday on the Phantom Dancer

And I've seen so many photos, heard so many commercial recordings by R. A. Rolfe's Goodrich Silvertown Orchestra, and now, here they'll be, live on this week's Phantom Dancer, backing the Boswell Sisters! They follow a brief drama about tyres, which you'll also hear from the same show, but it's the ginger ale subplot in this little dramatisation which I personally find most interesting

This week's Phantom Dancer Video of the Week: oop-boop-a-doop, another Betty Boop!

See the full play list and vid on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog. Enjoy...http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012 ... etty-boop/
