I've just realised I don't have a whole lot of Goodman orchestra stuff.
Is the Mosaic Goodman orch set a good purchase, in terms of DJable stuff for lindy hoppers?

There are a dozen songs on the set that I could not be without as a DJ. Extremely sharply executed, clever arrangements, in super hifi, and not released on any other decent compilations. Stealin' Apples, Zaggin' with Zig, Don't Be That Way, Cocoanut Grove, Take It, The Count (The Count!!!), Pound Ridge, Got To Be This Or That Pts 1 & 2, and a few others .... Solid medium tempo material. The other material up to 1945 is also rather good/interesting but I have not DJ:d from it.

That said, $120 is kind of pricey for 12 must-have songs. Also, the set has a tad too many alternate takes.

But of course you should buy it!

Rumour has it that a 1928-1946 Earl Hines set will be announced soon. I'm super excited about this as I have be pestering them with this suggestion for about 5 years. Finally some 30s Earl in (hopefully) decent fidelity!

Earl Hines recorded some great numbers around c1939-1941. Like a big band version of Fats Waller.

Oh, man. Want. Seriously want. But I think I need to get the Goodman too, as I still don't have enough of his well-mastered big band stuff!

Speaking of Mosaic, I just got back from the Harlem JAzz musuem last week and I got to listen to all those Savory Records, (TONS OF AMAZING STUFF BTW) I spoke with the person in charge and he said, Mosaic will be releasing a 6 cd box set within a year or two. The tracks are currently being handpicked by the Artistic Director there. YAY! Joining the mailing list to get the info on the release dates

Holy amazeballs batman! Still that can only scratch the surface of the collection.

I know that they've been looking for donations to help with the restoration, I wonder why they haven't jumped on kickstarter (or one of the other crowdfunding sites) with that?

Omsuperhoops - did you get your picture taken with Loren?

Are the sound samples on the Hines set failing for anyone else?

I had trouble too. I think they are Windows Media files mislabelled as MP3s. So they will play with a bit of messing about. If you are on a Mac, you need to install a WM player extension thing.

Thanks, opening the URL's directly through Windows Media Player works.

I haven't ordered any of the recent sets (but, boy, do I want to!), but I can brag about this: I found the Complete Sidney Bechet Blue Note and the Complete Armstrong Decca All-Stars Studio sets at Amoeba in SF yesterday. No box or book, but only $40 for the Bechet and only $36 for the Armstrong.

Happy New Year!
