No one's mentioned Count Basie Big Band "Montreux '77?"

Great version of Splanky, though I still prefer the Sands version.

Damn!Lawrence wrote:I was mistaken. It's the version of "Mellow Tone" that sound rushed on that CD.Lawrence wrote: If I remember correctly, the "Live at the Sands" version sounds like they are trying to rush through to the end of the song because they are bored playing it.Reuben wrote:Um... "In A Mellow Tone" isn't even on that CD.

The versions of Splanky and Mellow Tone of which I was thinking are actually from Count Basie "On the Road" (1979). http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... cyxdgb8ol0 Jesse referred me to it years ago. It also has the Basie version of "Blues for Stephanie," which is phenomenal.
I don't own Live at the Sands, so I can't comment on it, but the best intro I've heard to Splanky is from:
Count Basie - The Complete Roulette Live Recordings, Disc 7, Track 13.
[Mosaic, from a concert in Sweden, I believe.]
It just carries me away, and the rest of the song doesn't disappoint either.

I just picked up the En Concert Avec Europe 1 CD, it has some solid stuff on it, including a good version of Splanky. Not sure if it is the best, I need to organize all the Splankys and compare them.
I was just thinking, I could DJ ten plus weeks in a row and play a different version of Splanky every time. I hate to say it, but I think the only people who would notice would be the DJs and one or two other people, maybe.
The only one that would be guaranteed to stand out to the masses would be the Real Group version.
Maybe I should do it, just to amuse myself, play a different version of Splanky everytime I DJ till I run out of good versions.

I think that's the version that's on the Golden Years (Pablo).mousethief wrote:No one's mentioned Count Basie Big Band "Montreux '77?"

Done that, already. It did not go over well. Unless the difference was prominent, even somewhat well-schooled dancers generally thought I was just playing the same song every time I DJ'ed and didn't care about the slight differences.Nate Dogg wrote:Maybe I should do it, just to amuse myself, play a different version of Splanky everytime I DJ till I run out of good versions.
