Trev - your set makes me extra cranky that I'm not there. Half of Sydney has decamped for Hullabaloo. >:|

Inside joke? The version of "Yacht Club Swing" by Echoes of Swing is sweet!
I think that's what he meant, Jesse - Yacht Club Swing: acquired.
The asterisked comment 'just baiting' was a reference to his joke 'might make a nice modernist hook into the real stuff'. Trev has a rep for playing a lot of bitching old school, but he's prepared to play a modern song (with an 'old' style) like 'Just because you can' for transitioning between 'old' and 'new' or for hooking in dancers who're not so keen on 'old' stuff.

Is that right, T?

I played that song again last night at a different event and it went down just as well. I also did a blues set last night and played 'My Man's an Undertaker' from Russell's other album 'Cat'. It was just as popular. Good on you for pimping Russell's albums, Jesse. :D

Thanks for clearing that up! Somehow I completely missed the sentence with the first *, so I wasn't getting the reference.

Speaking of which, I hadn't heard that Nora Jones track before. Nice! :)

Now I have some new ideas for my DJ set tonight...

Doh, I totally forgot to play it too. Maybe tomrrow night. By the way, make sure you get the version of Sinking Soon with the funky trombone. There's a different version without it that doesn't do it as much for me.

the scary part is how many of these tunes I have on my computer and just hadn't gotten around to playing at dances yet. Thanks for the (free) ideas.

I recently found the Tommy Dorsey version of Wade in the Water.

Yesterday I caught up on the Hey Mr Jesse podcasts and heard the Catherine Russell version of 'All the Cats Join In' (I got the original tip from your tweet, Jesse).
Bizarrely, last weekend when I first played 'Just Because You Can' I followed it up with a 1946 Peggy Lee version of 'All the Cats Join in' which I never usually DJ. It's a very mellow, nice version, and I played it mostly because I was working down the energy in the room from 'crazy' to 'mellow' before moving back up.

Great songs, I hadn't heard these versions before!

Do you know when and where Black Bottom Stomp was recorded? It is not listed in the discogs.

Thanks!

i don't know which version trev played, but the version i know is from 1952 with lil armstrong and zutty singleton (what a line-up!). i think it was recorded in france for vogue, but i don't have my discography with me this weekend. i can check next week.

I think it's the same version. I don't have an accurate year (I have it down as 1951, but it could be 1952) but it was from a Bechet compilation album called "Marchand De Poissons" if that helps.

Thanks, lipi and trev! I'm thinking about ordering the latest edition of Tom Lord's discography, but at $350 it's a tad pricey...

I go in and use the paper version at a local university library for free... but $350 for all 30-odd volumes is a very good price... Unless you mean the online version or DVD?
