For a slow dancing alternative to Chick's flag waver, the Hamp combo would absolutely be my pick too, anchored nicely by the solid, "heavy", four-to-the-bar time keeping by Allen Reuss, giving ample space for some great soloing, and then especially those deep sax tones, they really get me going

I got a request when I dj'ed at Herrang for the version of Don't be that Way that Ella and Louis do - it's on "Ella and Louis again". Very nice for a slow/blues version.

and I concur, if I'm dj'ing a lindy hop dance I will always play the Chick Webb version over the slower Benny Goodman one. The Chick Webb version makes the BG one sound apathetic.

No, it has more "jank" sound. Thumpety thumpety rhythm; or to me the Chick Webb one is more "hot" while I find the BG one a little "sweet", nothing to do with tempo. I also like the little saxophone trills during the last chorus.

DJStarr uses a word with which counsel is not familiar; namely - "jank".

FWIW - I find the Webb version of DBTW rather clumsy and not too far removed from a voo-dee-oh-doh rinky tink 20s recording.

My favorite version is the Hamp version but I recently acquired the version by Jess Stacy & The Famous Sidemen that Jesse mentioned, and I'm enjoying quite a bit.

This is my favourite too. It's one of those friendly tempo/chunky rhythm versions that gets a slumpy crowd up and dancing again.

I hate to derail the thread, but I'm not starting a new one solely to address this.

All cute court-room analogies aside - you're becoming increasingly arrogant and condescending on this board, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't appreciate it.

I've noticed this about your tastes. Those of us who like the Webb version probably like it because it's not *too* refined.

Also, many of us like the "rinky tink" 20's music.
