Duke Ellington: Complete Columbia and RCA Victor Sessions

Anyone own this? It's the 4 cd set, and I believe it has all the stuff the Blanton-Webster has, is this true? If anyone owns it, how is the sound quality?

It's all good, I got it, it does include the entire Blanton-Webster stuff, so now I don't need to buy that album, plus it's got some more.

I almost have everything from my Proper box set of Duke now so that I may soon get rid of it.

I have it, and the sound quality seems to be very good. I recently got the No Lament set (and I had previously damaged and destroyed my Blanton-Webster CD set), and I'd say the disconforme 4-CD set is almost as good as, if not as good as, the No Lament set.

The liner notes provide a nice detail of information about artists and dates, but do not go into the level of detail that the Columbia releases offer. If you get the set from disconforme, I'd recommend getting some more stuff from them at the same time since it makes the shipping cost more worthwhile...

I think I'll go buy something from them now

um... confused. isn't the rca victor sessions a 24 disc set on its own?

ah, ok, this is just the blanton-webster stuff. interesting, i didn't know there were B-W recordings made for Columbia.

Yes, that's the one, it's good, I've been very happy with ALL my Duke Ellington purchases lately actually. Anyone have any suggestions of other albums of his to get?

You got the '38 stuff? it's real nice.. and sticking to the swing era, the small group stuff is mighty fine too.. (check out Cootie Williams Rugcutter's too)

For later Ellington, I'd recommend Eastbourne Performance and Unknown Session, but I think they're a bit outside your comfort zone.. you'd probably dig Piano in the Background though.

Yeah, I got Vol. 1 and 2 of his small group 2 disc sets released by Columbia, really good stuff. I'll check out the Cootie Williams stuff too, thanks.

I'm listening to it now and it's great!
I'm trying to get an "unread about/listening only" take on Duke's evolution as a composer. It's interesting how 4 of his earliest "hits" are all really slow dirge-like tunes (East St. Louis Toodle-o, Black and Tan Fantasy, Creole Love Call, and The Mooche) and they all also have the sweet Ellington dissonance. Contrast that with the faster numbers which sound much more generic and don't seem (to my ear) to be unmistakenly "Ellington".
