I have decided that "Honeysuckle Rose" by Count Basie (1937 Decca), is the most perfect swing track*.

The way the human mind works (or my mind anyway) ... despite reading this a few times, I was SURE Trev said "Honeysuckle Rose by Fats Waller" and I was trying to find Waller's 1937 Decca recording and wondering why I hadn't got it. But yes I have the Basie one too. Just listened now - I like it, it buzzes with energy. Although I think I prefer slower versions of that song (like the Waller 1934 one on this CD). To me, slower tempos suit the phrasing of the melody a bit better. Just listening to a few in my library, there are a lot of super versions of this song

I was listening to this version again the other day, and wondered if it was the same arrangement as in this Crytzer-Stout battle at DCLX2011? I don't know much about arrangements and things, but I wondered if that's partly why the battle was so fun: brilliant version of great song?

Mora's Modern Rhythmists recording of the song is basically the Basie arrangement. A touch faster. A bit lighter in flavor. It's probably my favorite modern recording of the tune.

Bryant's music is great - it's the sound quality that lets it down for me.
Yeah it's pretty much only available on those Classics, which are not known for quality of sound. I was pining on twitter for a Willie Bryant remaster project, but he recorded so little, that it's most likely to be part of a retrospective of one of his musicians (if such a fantasy project were to actually happen).

I suspect that the Chrono disc is actually dubbed from this LP, but with some noise reduction added afterwards. The shellack surface noise on Long About Midnight is exactly the same.
