Hey Andy,

What song did you guys dance to at the tribute - and is it the original version or was it sped up at all?

It's funny how that kind of packaging can really screw with things.. because I have them on a disc called "Young Ella", when I used to write stuff down I'd often write "Ella - A Tisket a Tasket" instead of "Webb - ..." even though I knew that they were really Webb's band..

Is the Hylton stuff any good? those are my favorite tracks on that hawkins disc.

I guess that I am going to have to do this on Manu's behalf.

Manu "Lazy ass" Smith

1. Ella Fitzgerald and her Famous Orchestra "The Radio Years" - Break 'Em Down
2. Erroll Garner - That's My Kick/Gemeni - Autumn Leaves
3. Eddie Condon and his Orchestra (1933 - 1940) - Madame Dynamite
4. Benny Goodman The V-Discs (1 of 4) - Oomph Fah-Fah
5.*

*
Then the CD player decided to f*ck me over and I gave up. Actually, it skipped on my very FIRST song too. What a waste of time.

This is why it's important to know something about BPMs: one of the competitors was absolutely certain that the J&Js were unfair because the fast song in the first heat was "way over 300" BPM. I swear most People have no idea what they are dancing to.

It's painting by numbers I say. just because two songs count in at 250 bpm doesn;t mean they are the same energy....so although it keeps it "fair" on paper...

You could have easily said;
"This is why it's important to know something about swing music..."

Technically you may be right, but he didn't say 'energy'; he gave me a number range. And think about it: isn't 'energy' also subjective?

I can't tell the guy, Oh no, you are wrong ..."Clap hands" has as much 'energy' as (that faster version of) 'Cottontail'. He may feel it diiferently than me and every other competititor and he has a right to that.

The other side of it is that some guy who can't tell the difference betweem 30+ BPM is running his mouth complaining that the DJ doesn't what he's doing. It's one thing to say he didn't like or enjoy the music, it's another thing to accuse rayned of being inaccurate. That kind of annoys me, because I know and trust Rayned.

In my opinion it's Rayned who got treated unfairly.

Sorry Mr. Rayned, I'll get my nose out of your butt now. :)

Who cares. If someone is walking around bitching that "Sugar Foot Stomp" is "way over 300," just dismiss them as being tempo retarded.

Hold on; be fair. Most use BPMs as a way of expressing how fast the song feels. I'm sure all of us have similarly estimated BPM inaccurately because the "feeling" or "energy" of the song makes it sound slower or faster than it actually is, only to be amazed afterwards what the actual BPM measure was. I wasn't there and perhaps this guys tone was highly accusatory/offensive, but most such complaints merely call for verification that it was accurate, and do not really attack the DJ as being a liar once they are confronted with the actual BPM reading.
