Barney Bigard

I've found 7 albums for him online, but many dont have audio samples, and many are either hard to get or more expensive.

Anyone have a solid album of his that they want to recommend?

(the curse of the dj...eyes are bigger than their wallet)

I would suggest looking for Barney Bigard & His Jazzpoators, which was a name given to one of Duke Ellington's small groups. (Duke rotated the names of his small groups around his key sidemen). These recordings may be listed as simply "Duke Ellington".

I can recommend Mosaic's "Duke Ellington: 1936-1940 Small Group Sessions" which was discussed here

Freddie - I have Barney Bigard and his Jazzopaters on the following two CDs:

The Duke Ellington Small Bands
Ellington's Small Units

I think I spin the songs on Ellington's Small Units more often, I love 'Barney Goin' Easy' and 'Have a Heart'.

I also have him featured as a sideman to Louis Armstrong on the California Concerts.

Hope this helps!

p.s. come out next Monday to Sonny's and I'll play you what you want from what I have.
