I figure they're usually both the same since many a times the label will just copy the liner notes from the LP and put them in the CD reissues...once again I wasn't trying to diminish the importance of gaining knowledge from liner notes, i've found a ton of great info in liner notes, it's just that you'll often times get a lot more detailed information (like who arranged what) from written sources that never make it to the web...and honestly, there's a ton that hasn't made it to the internet as of yet...the demand just isn't there...i mean, who talks about what arrangers wrote for Chick anyway? : )

I'll post some book recommendations on this thread later...i just finished basie's good morning blues last night, it was great...

Good link and interview. Thanks.

one thing - Van A. said that BG was carrying 8 brass 'later'. Goodman only carried 5 brass 3 tpts and 2 tbns until about 1944 when he bulked up to eight brass. All those classic Victors and Columbias were done with a brass quintet.

And Miller only carried 6 brass at first (counting him), then bulked up to 8 brass circa 1940 as slightly bigger bands became the norm.

Bill Elliott only carries 6 brass.

I've been to Christopher Popa's website before but had no idea that he had this article posted on it...Thanks for putting that link up!

Does anyone know if a bio ever came out on Chick?

Bill plays with 3 tpts and 3tbns. I play with 5 brass (3tpts/2tbns).
