I'm in the process of looking at my early Basie recordings (pre-1942)
There are the albums I've got or am looking at getting to date:

The Count Basie Story [Proper]
link

The Complete Decca Recordings (1937-1939)
link
Cutting Butter (The Complete Columbia Recordings 1939-1942) - Count Basie.
link

Count Basie & His Orchestra 1937/Chick Webb & His Orchestra 1936
link
Is there any other early Basie Albums worth looking for?
Is it worth getting:
Rock-A-Bye Basie: Live in '38 & '39 ?

Great minds think alike BTB - I was just searching for a thread to post my question when up came your thread. A question along a similar line - how much overlap is there between "Cutting Butter" set mentioned above and the
"Americas No 1 Band : The Columbia Years"
link
Is it worth possessing both?

None of the live recordings on CD4 of Americas No 1 Band : The Columbia Years" is on the Cutting Butter CD., and there are several other songs that are not on both.
I would say may be 40% of the songs on Americas No 1 Band CD are not in the Cutting Butter CD.
I love this CD Russell, in particularly the live recordings.

Check out the
Golden Years CDs. I think there are four of them. I've got 1-3, and I LOVE them. They feature radio broadcasts and such - music made specifically for dancing. Sound quality on most tracks is good enough for most, I'd think.
Vol. 1
Vol. 2
Vol. 3
