CD Release: Roger Humphries Big Band - Don't Give Up

Hey Folks, for those who attended last year's PittStop in Pittsburgh, PA or otherwise have heard of the Roger Humphries Big Band, the boys just released their new CD "Don't Give Up" which is 50% danceable and 100% great big band jazz in a style reminiscent of Basie and Dizzy's big band work. www.rogerhumphries.com should be up and running at some point, but in the meantime you can get the CD at buythiscd.com.

There is a sound sample on the website, and from the sounds of it and the glowing comments I've heard about this band, I'm definitely going to have to pick up a copy myself.

Anyone want to chime in with comments about them or this release?

I have yet to listen to the release, but they are a local favorite that plays excellent renditions of especially later era work (as you can see by their song choices, and the versions of them they chose). The musicians are top notch, such as well known Dwayne Dolphin, Nelson Harrison who played with the Count Basie band shortly before he died (and wrote the last tune on the record, "The RH Factor", a young Tony Campbell who can put down some truely great solos on sax, and of course Roger who's played with so many greats.

I'll have a chance to respond more to the record after listening to it through, but they are a great catch live if you ever come to Pittsburgh, they play weekly at the Jazz & Blues club. They are great for listening or for dancing, depending on your mood and tune.

Blues Plus Four is a pretty killer tune. I hear Dawn Hampton's crazy about it, but I haven't yet played it at a dance she's been at...that will have to change soon...
