Except perhaps for Ornette Coleman and his followers, that is absolutely and completely not true. The "categories" to which you refer manifests the music theories behind every song out there. There are different paradigm music theories for jazz, blues, rock, etc., and sub-theories within ...

Favorite "Groove" albums? ("Postwar?")

I don't have much knowledge of this non-genre of music so can someone recommend their ten or so favorite "groove" cds that I should look for?

so far on the other thread people have mentioned Gene Harris and Ramsey Lewis... what cds by them? and who else...?

thanks!

i love all the tunes from COUNT PLAYS DUKE, a new CD from Grover Mitchell's Count Basie Orchestra. All new arrangements, great tempi, gorgeous playing, and of course the audio fidelity is top-notch.

one late Slim album I heard in the store recently was "Siboney," which was a "latin-tinged" album mostly of songs I never heard of.

I was able to get my start DJing only because of BPM charts. Without that it's just way too hard to remember how fast stuff is when flipping through a book. I heard disc one of the Slim Proper Box in the shop the other day, and it's fabulous. Something else to look for: I heard that there's a movie "Absolute Beginners" that features Slim Gaillard performing a song called "Sellin' Out" or something. The guy told me it was an awesome c...
