I understand that, of course. I mean that it seems as though it would have been easier for him to use four fingers on the frets, and three to pluck and strum the strings, rather than to do what he did. Well for one thing I seem to recall that Django often played borrowed instruments, and there's ju...

a live band can vary tempo wildly, so i think DJs ought to too, but bands don't usually switch it up from hot new orleans jazz to new testament basie from song to song, so DJs probably shouldn't either. i think that is a bit jarring, but sometimes it can be good too. as for not being able to please ...

if i don't own it, i haven't heard it, so how would i know i'm missing out?

i suppose the big 18 is on my list, although everybody else already seems to own it somehow. of course i have never knowingly heard anything off the album so i have no idea if it's any good or not.

i vote that if you can possibly, conceivably, even maybe dance west coast to it as well as lindy hop, it's "groove" music.

No, I'm talking pre-swing traditional jazz with a 2-beat feel that did not use a swing rhythm and used a Tuba as the main element of the rhythm section. Polka rhythm is in triplets. OK, whatever, I didn't hear the song. Also, not to be anal (ok, I'll be anal) I'm pretty sure polka music is 2/4 rhyt...

song spotting

I turned on KKJZ over the weekend and suddenly this slamming tune knocks me over and out. I was driving and I kept saying "Duke? Duke? DUKE?" but I'd never heard this song in the Ellington canon before. The DJ finally mentioned the song title and artist. Does anybody own this album? This s...

Lunceford, among other bands, used a two beat rhythm that, I suppose, you could call "polka" (which is what you mean by oompah loompah rhythm I assume). I certainly wouldn't call it pre-swing though. That kind of music definitely inspires much more charleston-related dancing in me. And sin...

Jazz Anecdotes is by far my favorite. It's funny because it was almost the first jazz book I ever read and now that I'm reading many more, I discovered that J.A. got many of its items from earlier books. So it's kind of like a "best of", at least humor-wise.

I think some musicians can copy the greats so well that most people (including us) would not be able to tell the difference, but there are always aficionados who can tell the difference. It might be the bandmate who played with the great for 60 years, but there's always someone.
