well the best big bands I've danced to recently have been led by very talented musicians who are also swing dancers -- specifically Jonathan Stout and Solomon Douglas. Joel from Vancouver specifically courted musicians he liked and worked with them over a series of gigs to help them become more appe...

When the LCJO came to Minneapolis/St. Paul years ago, several of them came over and jammed with local musicians at our weekly Thursday night dance at Tapestry. I drove several of them over myself! Wynton was even there for a while. I think I remember one or two of the Lincoln Center guys attempting...

Minor keys are more difficult to play in. I think if you take any genre of music you will have more music in major than in minor. This is definitely true in classical music [I am guessing here but I think I'm right, how is that for being definitive]. Minor keys have all those annoying sharps and fla...

thanks for cheering me up today! They are fairly common sense but when written out like that are pretty damn funny. As far as this section is concerned, I need some advice: Request Policy. The Syndicate deejays are encouraged to take requests. However, a deejay is not obligated to take a request. Sc...

my ultimate lindy hop fantasy is to dance with Wynton Marsalis. It doesn't even have to be lindy hop. I'd be happy with a waltz or a fox-trot. to ramble with this thread somemore, it takes a lot of time and effort to dance well. I'm not suprised that singers (i.e. Ella and Mel) have been known to da...

cool. Primal Scream and All-Star Tribute to Maynard Ferguson. Bring your earplugs for that one! However, I really enjoy the Clayton-Hamilton orchestra, they have backed both Diana Krall and Barbara Morrison on recent albums, and I think they swing hard. If I was in LA that weekend I'd definitely go ...

Billie Holiday remixed
KEXP (our local hip indie station) has been playing "Spreadin' Rhythm Around" off of this album:
Billie Holiday Remixed & Reimagined
I like that track a lot - check it out!

Instead its a reason to buy him an old testament Basie CD as a lesson in hi hats, and perhaps refer him to some sources of information on swing playing. yes I'm looking forward to hearing the samples also. There was a kid that played with Solomon Douglas' big band when Solomon lived in Seattle a co...

Joshua Welter I'm surprised he'd have a problem with Woodside Live @ Sands... I would think it's probably a matter of him preferring the classic version (as everyone does) rather then an actual dancability issue. p.s. I was trying to avoid mentioning his name but thought it would help make my point...
