I think the reason that major keys are typically used in swing is because major keys are the default for most Western music; minor keys are reserved to say something special. "Easy to Remember" By William Zinsser talks about how Cole Porter and the Gershwins were the first songwriters to ...

Trying to save money since I'm not working full time at the moment, but I had a decent tax return so I went a little nuts. 11 CD's I bought today Jay McShann - Black & Blue Sessions: Confessin' The Blues Al Grey & Arnett Cobb - Black & Blue Sessions: Ain't That Funk For You Shirley Scott...

I'd be interested in seeing some people's essential lists for Blue's CD. Just like the ones we can get in the Links on Swing music. Although I would say some of the CD's on everyone's swing list (Jimmy Witherspoon comes to mind) would also double in blues.

Well, if you go by Allmusic, Cooper was with the Sultans till 46. But of course AllMusic may be off or there just may not be any other recordings past 41?

I'd love to see more video clips at a dance venue. It would probably be a little tough mixing two DVD or VCR's at a dance. But, how about just throwing one in once every once in awhile if you have a venue with monitors. Like the first song during a band break. A projector would be better, but even a...

Blues by deffinition is very broad, I am just rebutting the claim by Nando that soul is R&B and R&B is blues. Where did I say that R&B IS blues? I was making the association with the name sharing between R&B and Blues and the fact that R&B have influences in blues. I think that ...

First of all, I barely consider Neo-Swing real music, rock or jazz. However, even though most of it sucks and wouldn't be played by any of us, it does have a swing beat. At least enough of one for ECS dancers to enjoy if they don't care about the musical content. Some critics say Jump Blues is more ...

And one last thing. I heard a couple of great blues tunes this past weekend at the house I was staying at in Atlanta. One was a Prince song and another was from Living Colour. I can tell you from the people who were at the house (other DJ's) that both those songs would have fit perfectly in a blues ...

Roy, I don't want to get into a pissing match with Allmusic.com because they are not the ultimate bible on the subject. Especially when I was just playing Devil's Advocate. All Music Guide is in fact a Guide writen by musicians and music critics. In fact my roommate writes reviews for AMG. While it'...

So anything that is slow is acceptable. Including the latest trend of some DJ's DJing soul/motown/funk along with slow jazz in blues rooms. When a DJ plays almost no actual blues in a blues room it makes me wonder if that DJ even knows what blues is. Just to be a little nitpicky and to play devil's...

The Grotto is one of the only places I know in the state that still gets a rockabilly crowd. Especially when Paul DJs. I'm sure the atmosphere is different when Abdel DJs, but through a quirk of fate, I've never been there when Abdel spins. I personally don't mind the rockabilly folks at the music....

I was at Z Grotto last month, and there was a lot of rockabilly - especially during the last hour. I didn't think there was much groove there at all.

I'd say SoFlex had a decent mix, but a lot more groovier music than I heard in Tampa.

Seriously, if he's going to tie up your time at the booth, make him buy you a drink. He'll go away for a bit, and maybe when he realizes he's wasting your time and his money, he'll limit his time. Otherwise, just tell him, "Unless you're gonna propose, you should let me do my job." Or just...
