Music used to attract those who don't like Jazz to Lindy Hop causes those who do like Jazz to leave Lindy Hop. Or they could find a Lindy dance where they play their sort of music  They shouldn't have to... especially if it's being billed as a "Lindy dance." In fact, that should be ...

Pre-bop Jazz Guitar imix

I don't know if this will be of interest to anybody, but I just threw together a pretty good imix of pre-bop jazz guitar playing. Go to the itunes music store, and just search for pre-bop jazz guitar and it should be there.

3 brass (i.e. 2 trpts, 1 tbn) / 3 Saxes + rhythm - which is a common 20's-30's size band.. This is as opposed to a 5/4 band, which I have, which is 5 brass, 3trpts.2tbns, 4 saxes - which is more common in the late 30's early 40's.

I've learned a lot just by copying arangements in to the computer and then reaaranging them slightly. It's not a totally education-less experience.

There are several stocks that you could use as a base - why reinvent the wheel if you don't have to?
Check out www.yestertunes.com
Also there are plenty of late 20's-early 30's tunes already written for a 3/3 band on there.

Do those still exist?-Near as I can tell the only kind of jazz fests and parties that exist are either trad, straight ahead, or smooth.

I wish there were something like JATP (at least the early ones). If I can get enough pull at our local fest, that would be something I'd like to see.

Absolutely. I'd rather hear guys like Dan Barrett and Dan Levinson and Howarld Alden in a Basie small group setting were they riffing behind each others solos and really interacting. The settings they often are in at these festivals are totally straight ahead snooze-fest where each person takes a lo...

Most trad festivals are not oriented toward dancing. Often the allstar sets are filled with 10 minute songs, little interaction between the musicians. They all kind of sit there half awake, and then, "Oh, is it my turn now?". Although the soloists are often some of the best in the biz, I, ...

Really though, the question I have to ask when recording a song, is "does the world really need another version of BLANK?" or "Does the world really need a recording of this version of BLANK?" For some of those tunes I would have said no before hearing the recording we made. IDMA...

There is a 6-CD set of Benny Goodman airchecks called something like "Live from the Madhattan Room" from 1937-8. You can see just how little big bands of the day really catered to our kind of dancing. There are plenty of novelties and non-swing tunes, ballads, etc., plus the inevitable ban...

A or D? The recording was done on all of those awesome vintage mics I described earlier, and fed into a mid 50's analog mixing board, and through some more 50's analog compressors, and into a first generation ADAT (which is a digital 8-track machine that records onto super VHS tapes). I'll leave up ...
