I've noticed I've been playing lots of songs that feature clarinet lately. Goodman, Shaw, Boilermakers, Edmund Hall, Eddie Shu, Albert Nicholas, Barney Bigard, etc etc.

Don't know why or when it started. It's weird as I remember maybe 7-8 years ago distinctly hating clarinet.

I second "Shimmie-Sha Wabble" - I love that song. Also the stuff by Moten.

Oh! "Doin' the New Low Down" as well. Can't believe I forgot that.

That Lindy Hop - Duke Ellington (1930) There's a vocal on the 1930 recording but I've got one or two instrumental versions of it.

Peter is pretty much known for his soul sets these days. He did the same at RAF. He was in the bar at Herrang last year where they played soul/disco for at least one night. That worked because there was still swing upstairs. Disgusting. It's like bringing your wife and your whore to the same place ...

I understand the principle, but I think my point is - can you really do this from thousands of tracks, or is better to have a shortlist, actual or mental? I do it every time I DJ, so I guess the answer is yes, you really can. How do you pick which songs from your thousands to put on your short list...

Could it be a reaction to the hot jazz trend? What "hot jazz trend" is that? Has there been any "Hot Jazz Lindy Exchange" 's? ...and I'm being serious. I'm quite out of the loop. It's possible. I've had the same thought. There may not have been hot jazz exchanges but there has b...

I've never really shortlisted music, even when I was schlepping around my CDs. I think the couple of times that I did, I didn't bring something that I later decided I wanted to play.

I'm also starting to see a trend of Soul/R&B "Lindy" Exchanges cropping up, which I find weird.

Re: Are dancers musical tastes changing?

I just had a series of the weirdest requests at Soflex during late night. within a span of an hour I got a request for Tom Jones-Sex Bomb, another one for anything from the latest Justin Timberlake record, and a third request for anything modern. All of these sound like songs that are more appropri...

There are a couple of Duke Ellington CDs live at dances (Private Collection 2 and 8 I think), but you have to be careful with ALL "live at x dance" albums as a measure of the band leading the room as most of them are edited down to album length and frequently have the order of the set list...

When I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago, Dawn Hampton was telling me how awesome this album was. I was surprised since I'd only heard a fairly negative response up until that point.

hahahaha! I was dancing with kitkat at one point and she noted that it had to be you DJing, she knew your style (and seemed to like it of course). Just thought that was neat. Interesting. Maybe this belongs in the "Finding Your Voice as DJ" thread, but I'd actually love to hear how one des...
