I've got to say, the PDX stuff from last year looked pretty cool...as do the tattoos from this year.

"Cotton Tail" and "Woodside" are played as much as they are for a reason: They're freaking good. They will never be played out, but it's better to dig a little deeper and find something that doesn't get as much play.

Every so often I'll throw some Prince in towards the end of the night to get people moving towards the door--but since Prince is a local celebrity here, some people stay longer than usual--and to close up, I usually spin a White Stripes tune or two.

I spun a 4am jam at Showdown with the following:

"Doggin' Around" Basie
"Toby" Bennie Moten
"Seventh Avenue Express" Basie
"GT Stomp" Earl Hines
"Jumpin at the Woodside" Basie

hey, it's kennly! just thought i'd pop in and say a few words... i started djing because most of the DJs at a local (college) venue were quite frankly, terrible, and i was tired of dancing to bad music. drew was moving to minnesota, so he wasn't coming out much, and attendance was down because peop...

I kind of have a theme song. When I was 'establishing' my online presence in 1998 I was looking for a name. My handle was suggested by a good friend of mine, Lindy Greer. Well, for those that remember, "Where's My Gravy" was a song by Steve Lucky. Which I liked at the time I have the albu...

Re: Jay McShann

There's a Proper Pair of Jay McShann -- how is this stuff? Should I pick it up? I've heard some exciting stuff about this group; I love their tune on Engine Room, and I heard Charlie Parker got his start there. Did they have any vocalists? Is Charlie Parker on the Proper Pair? -yakov Bird didn't ge...

Lindy Hop was created in response to swing music. If you don't have the music, you don't have the dance. If you have other music, you have another dance.

I like good music. And good rockabilly requires damn good musicianship.

I only hate it at a swing dance for the main reason that so many people think it's interchangeable with swing music because of its vintage and use of acoustic instruments.

I don't play stuff that doesn't inspire me to dance. I don't play stuff that I don't think is any good. I don't like playing a lot of vocal jazz, but I don't like playing all instrumentals, either. I don't usually play really slow songs, unless the night is wearing on. It's a tough rut to get out of...

My tastes are cyclical. I got on a Basie kick and for months, that was all I could buy. Then I got on a Duke kick and bought up a whole bunch of his stuff, then kind of frittered around buying this and that, and I'm so broke now I pine for the days of about three months ago where I could buy music a...

My take on exchanges is that they should be for showing the rest of the country how great your scene is, including DJs. If you don't have a scene worth sharing then you shouldn't be having an exchange in the first place. I agree, but can't it also serve the purposes of encouraging the local scene t...

Yes, this is the red cover I was thinking of.
