Re: Insurance issues

Not only collection insurance, but liability insurance is needed. I have been to many venues that would not allow a dj to set up without a $1,000,000.00 Liability policy in effect. www.adja.org it's cheap insurance for Dj's I've heard that required of the organizer by the venue, but never the DJ, u...

I submitted a query, I'd like to spin a little. Looks like since I am working back in my field and on a Southwest hub I am going to be able to bankroll this one.

I have his Proper Pair but am very unimpressed by the sound quality of the older stuff (and this is coming from me!). Does the JAzz Archives or Chronological have better sound quality in regards to the 41-43 material? I've got the Jazz Archives disc and the sound quality is pretty solid. You don't ...

Above all else: Count Basie Bennie Moten Jay McShann Duke Ellington Honorable Mention: Pete Johnson, Buster Smith, Lester Young, Slim and Slam Buster Smith? Really? Do you have music I don't know about or do you just heavily rotate the seven(!) songs from The Legendary Buster Smith ? As for me, I'd...

Well, unless I got a cool little powerbook, it's hard to lug 2 devices around. But I understand the not being able to preview thing. Personally, as backwards as it may sound, I actually still carry my CDs with me. But in case I have missed something, esp. buying stuff from iTunes and not have time ...

Jazz Archives' Jay McShann: Kansas City Bounce 1941-43 is a good snapshot of stuff from his big band when Charlie Parker and Jimmy Witherspoon were with him, but a lot of overlap with the Chronological Classics stuff. Still Jumpin' the Blues was released within the past few years and features Duke R...

my thoughts on neo and its overestimated necessity can be found at the bottom of this page. When I think of neo-swing I think of the slew of bands in the mid-late 1990s that followed in the wake of Royal Crown Revue and the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Essentially it is ska in a different and much more k...

I really dig "Sleigh Ride" as done by the Squirrel Nut Zippers on the Christmas Caravan Album. I've got Ultra-Lounge's Christmas Cocktails Vols. 1 & 2, some all right stuff on there but not entirely what I'd spin for dancing. Yule B Swingin' is solid. It's got some of my favorites on t...

Re: The stuff you don't like

There are some very popular swing/jazz musicians whose music I dislike. Because I dislike it, I don't buy or have it. This gets me into a sticky situation when somebody requests it. For example, I strongly dislike Sinatra (just my taste, nothing more), but there are some skillful dancers here who l...

I have it in boxes somewhere, I don't carry it because I don't want to play it. I don't want to hear it, either, and not carrying it absolves my consicence if someone were to ask for it--if they ask (and they rarely do), I don't lie when I say I don't have it. I spin for predominantly-newbie crowds ...

I've got my biases because my name is printed in the liner notes of Yoko's album and I would go see her most Mondays when I lived in Chicago.

Jonny Lang's version is an all right WCS tune, but IMO doesn't compare to Yoko's version.
