grapevine

Just curious what the "grapevine" is. Janice? Nicole? If we're gonna get all in a hussy over grapevine, then... At the end of the evening, whoever ends up "winning" will have played much more than 15 minutes worth of music. This I heard from Janice and Nicole. So I'm just wonder...

Re: Charlie Parker

I think you mispoke/mistyped when you said that it seperates bop from jazz. Perhaps from "Traditional" jazz, but Bop replaced Swing as the paradigm for jazz, and in some ways still is. Many jazz musicians consider Bop to BE jazz. Sorry for the late reply - somehow I missed the replies to ...

Wynton Marsalis

So does Wynton Marsalis and the LCJO qualify as "Harlem Jazz"? I currently am immersed into Wynton right now; I'm also listening to Duke Ellington @ Newport a lot.....I feel that in some ways Wynton is a reincarnation of the Duke. Live in Swing City swings the hardest of any modern album (...

Re: gimme

i need more instrumentals with definite bounce, more up-tempo post-war pieces and some more male vocals. since I don't know anything about your collection this is kind of shooting in the dark - but for male vocals - in the groove/swing I have been playing Curtis Stigers --- out of Boise, has the Ge...

And sure Kirk, Basie and Hines had gigs and other connections to Harlem, but what do they really have to do with "Harlem Jazz." Here's my defense of the Basie picks - I had a chance to ask Frankie Manning a couple of years ago who his favorite band to dance to was - Ken Burns' Jazz had ju...

FUN! Here's mine -- I don't have times with me, so I think this might be over with Cow Cow Boogie; if I have to cut one it would be Evenin' 1. Stardust - Louis Armstrong 2. Cow Cow Boogie - Ella with the InkSpots 3. Black Beauty - Duke Ellington 4. Evenin' - Count Basie @Newport w/Jimmy Rushing 5. H...

Re: who's going to win?

Additionally, a lot of factors will influence the contest: * The time of the DJs slot * The order of the DJs * The popularity of the particular DJ, not necessarily their ability as a DJ, but a measure of how friendly they are with the rest of the crowd. The other interesting thing about the schedul...

who's going to win?

of the eight dj's in the battle, I've heard 5 spin (3 fairly regularly). While I've enjoyed all of them, they each have pretty unique styles, so I'm quite excited to hear what will be played. I've heard through the grapevine that each DJ will have 15 minutes to show off their best stuff, then after ...

Isn't Ernestine verging on belonging in the "overplayed music" thread? That's all I hear about these days... Seems everyone has been buying/playing Ernestine music a lot lately. that's because she is so good, but I've already admitted my Ernestine bias. :D She's neck and neck with Barbara...

I played Potato Chips once... I got annoyed with how repetative it is. I guess I'm into the wrong type of music for that to bother me. :) Other than that though, I dig a lot of Slim Gaillard stuff. Ha! Potato Chips was played and played and played in Seattle, it's currently on everyone's "plea...

comparing these two instituations is like comparing Ella's Band during the 30's and Ella during the 50's. (for the most part). sure we can draw comparisons , but really whats the point, other then the analizing of each artist and then comparing what goes over in what scene? I love em both. So how a...

I was thinking last night... How many of you were in a jazz band earlier in your life? Ever played jazz music? Hell, ever a musician in any way shape or form? ....... Perhaps it's something about jazz music that just seems to attract more men than women... perhaps mainly at that age. *shrug* [/gene...
