I got screwed on a technics 1200 thru ebay.. my advice from that experience is to check out people's feedback and see if they've gotten positive feedback on similar stuff.. the girl I bought it from had sold a few records and nothing else.. it showed up sitting in a box it would only fit in diagonal...

At an exchange especially, I think all you can do is pick your DJs well. Get folks who have a wide range, but recognize where they lean. If you pick good/experienced DJs, you don't really need to tell them what to play. at one extreme is djs going nuts with a full hour of motown or dixieland or neos...

We're just starting to break up the 4 hour set thing we've had going in Portland for years.. more with trading than twin 2 hr sets though, cuz I think it stinks having to choose either opening or closing.

(CLIP 7)Sugar Foot Stomp - The Big Reunion - Fletcher Henderson All Stars - Fresh Sound FSR-CD 44 - All star reunion of Henderson alumni. Has 9 tracks with hto jazz, swing and a few ballads. I have this on vinyl and really love it, I didn't know it was available on CD. I don't think it is - I think...

Wow, I have a Maxine Sullivan/Scott Hamilton CD that I disliked. Swingin Sweet from 1988, I believe. I didn't find anything worth playing. That's the one.. go back and listen to Loch Lomond, the bagpippy sounding intro is a little unusual, but it's a great tune. Not that it's a thread for her, but ...

This also makes me wonder, why is it okay that modern foxtrot is far different from 20s/30s foxtrot but a modern take on lindy hop is frowned upon by so many? Is it simply a ballroom vs vernacular viewpoint or is it something else? I don't think he said it's ok.. even seeing old timers at trad danc...

7. - Sugarfoot Stomp. Good arrangement. I might DJ with this. But I find the insistant cymbal work annoying. Give me 4 on the pedal at this tempo. Despite the generally high energy playing and the musicianship, the energy is not there for me. But I still might play it. This listening test is great....

Yeah, they did an AFR Jubillee show. The tracks I have on a Stash "Woman in Jazz" box set are from that mostly, I think.

I agree with Julius, but sometimes I get really surprised too, I'll throw on something at 230 on a night where I seriously sometimes never go over 200, and half the people in the room are still dancing..

Actually, with Mora I think it's also the recording technique, he goes more for the binaural mic approach so that you're actually hearing the band as a single unit - rather than stuffing a mic into every possible "musical orifice" and trying to make it sound like a band after the fact. (no...
