When I hear "Count Basie" the first thing I think of isn't "Harlem"... instead I think "Kansas City." I'm with you on this one. It's not as though I'd go to and event promting the contributions of Kansas City and play a bunch of Chick Webb. Admittadly I did use a Basie...

Yeah with you we'd only need one song :P

Actually you can get 5 really good licks perhaps 6 in that amount of time. It's going to be tuff, but that's what makes it fun.

Dude I'm thowing down for Reuben. Given the criteria I think he best suits it. But hey that just me.

As for judging I think it should be both dancers and peers.

anyway, regarding the topic - I think a lot of stuff has been reissued at some point, somewhere - like International Sweethearts of Rhythm, it's a bitch to find their music, but you can find LP reissues, you don't hafta go all the way back to the 78. There's a couple tunes on this collection: http:...

Every music store has a decent collection of Jazz over there, though the bigger stores are better. Their love for Jazz is also showed i...

I ask this in this thread because I remember my jazz band in highschool being all guys and one young woman. We went to some competitions and other performances and the other school's jazz bands seemed much the same to me, while the concert bands and string orchestras were much more evenly divided a...

Since none of us ever knew Duke I doubt we'll ever know why some songs never were rerecorded. KoKo adn Jack the Bear were specific vehicles for Blanton. This could be another reason why they never got redone in large fashion.

Duke, while being an artist through and through, still admitted he was obligated to play what the audiences wanted to hear. If that meant playing mostly old hits, he was more than willing to do that because the audience was so important to him. Or maybe he thought those particular songs were just f...
