Check out "The Raggle Taggle," from that CD.

Yes, and that's the break! If you hear it in context, the syncopation is remarkable.

"Shake That Jelly Roll" - J.C. Cobb & His Grains of Corn, from a CD called Chicago Black Small Bands

The solo in the break at 0:40 is mind-boggling and awesome!

I have a remix of Peggy Lee's "Fever." It's pretty much "old vocals over breakbeats," but it's worth checking out. I'm pretty sick of the song, in general, and of her original recording, in particular. I may have played the remix a long time ago. You can find it on Best of the Si...

If the problem is with just a few tracks, then, as Stan Graves mentioned, you can use a sound editor to increase the volume. I'm not an expert in that process, but I'd recommend using EQ to cut noise/hiss, then compressing the dynamic levels, then using a limiter to boost the volume. You may also sw...

A big test comes when the music contains high frequencies. If you can cut the hiss, and keep the high stuff you want, then you can make it easier to hear the highest parts of the music because the hiss won't be masking those frequencies. I tried it, recently, with Ellington's "Goin' Nuts,"...

I've used CDs, mostly. When I've used a laptop, it's usually been for a few, select tracks. Personally, I'm pretty happy with CDs. There are probably plenty of software suggestions in the Laptop DJing thread.

I downloaded the demo a long time ago. It was cool to scratch, but you don't need something that sophisticated in order to DJ a lindy night (as you noted). I'd go for something else.

Re: Earlier threads

The search function of phpBB is so crappy, so I'm putting links to earlier related threads here. I had tried searching but didn't get these results in my first tries. Maybe there are even more threads... Try using Google's advanced search for this and other boards (Yehoodi, etc.). Basically, the fo...

Well, that depends on what they lost. If they lost some Basie, it's a tragedy. If they lost some generic, white crap that doesn't swing, it's a blessing.

Hehehe...let the second round of flames begin!

The first one is "Wolverine Blues," by Earl Hines. I don't know what the second one is.

I like the earlier stuff from the Proper set. Much of the later stuff is a bit jump-blues/boggie-woogie/broad/slow for my taste. Many dancers seem to love it, though.

I agree. I wish I could say that it's Basie or Earl Hines, but more often, it's Lucky Millinder or Cab Calloway.

I've played around with it a little. I used a Basie recording (I know - the sacrilege) of "Sent for You Yesterday," added a kick and a snare, and chopped it up a little bit. My goal wasn't to make something clean, but rather, to make something funky. I only played with the first minute, or...

Harmonica blues. I was going to suggest Harmonica Blues Orgy, but that might not be something you'd want to give Dad. Instead of that, check out This Is the Blues Harmonica, which sounds similar.
