Also, from your description it sounds like they are accenting the hihat beat in the wrong place. It should not have a backbeat (heavy 2+4). Instead the emphasis should be on 1+3 (the open part). CHOO-chit-chit-CHOO-chit-chit, not choo-CHIT-chit-choo-CHIT-chit. I got that from Hal Smith and Josh Coll...
