DJs are also too oriented toward not screwing up, so they overplay popular stuff instead of bring out a good, diverse set. It also decreases the chance that the DJ will pay attention to the crowd or even be able to get a good sense of the crowd. That sucks. I try to take the opposite view when I DJ...

I wish she'd reconsider. A dj has to bring all their CDs, doesn't get to dance as much, has to show up at particular times, take abuse on forums, etc. Waiving the event fee seems like a reasonable exchange. Sure, I enjoy djing, but there are definite downsides, too, and $$ helps make up for the dow...

As DJs when the room is filled with new dancers, fresh out of an intro lesson, we need to be aware that a lot of the guys are very intimidated and nervous. The more we can do make them feel comfortable the better, that will increase the chances that they will come back. I agree. It helps, though, w...

I don't expect to get paid, but it sure is nice. Especially at local venues. It makes sense to the venue organizer, because I can only really afford to buy new CDs with the money I get from DJing. I once got paid to DJ at a venue in LA. Unfortunately, I wasn't even paid enough to cover what I payed ...

As a patron of an exchange, I would rather have a more "exclusive" DJ lineup, so that I know I'm getting my money's worth while dancing. As a DJ, I would rather have "all comers." That way, I can DJ.

I think it's a disservice for teachers to do a "beginning lindy" lesson, because they inevitably use a slow-to-midtempo song. Then the DJ is forced to play slower songs, or else the newbies can't dance to it. I think it's better to teach the beginners something like ECS or charleston, that...

I put it in quotes for a reason. There are many intermediate dancers who consider themselves lindy hoppers, but don't have very much knowledge about music or experience in DJing. Notice also that I didn't say just any old experienced dancer, but an experienced dancer that I respect. There are people...

Requests from newbie neo-swingers for BBVD or Brian Setzer are fun. I know I'm a whore for playing that stuff, but I'll do it. It's like throwing a bone to a puppy. It's not as if my NOT playing their request is going to educate them or anything. Whereas, if I do play it, they might have fun and com...

I usually just let it play. Usually 1 or 2 couples will come out and dance to it, even if it's really weird. Sometimes it's good to clear the floor, so people will buy stuff from the bar or whatever. If it's really, really bad and no one's dancing to it, I'll fade it out and say something like, &quo...

Neo-swing?!?!

We recently had a neo-swing night at one of our clubs. It was like traveling back in time to 1998. There were about 8 regulars, and 30-40 newbies, mostly high-school aged kids. The club was not packed, but it wasn't empty by any means. I didn't play all neo-swing, but I definitely busted out all the...

That's funny. Meeshi and I did a Basie vs. Ellington theme a while back and nobody showed up.

"Jumpin at the Savoy"

There's a song from an old video that goes something like, "Jump, Jump, Jump . . . Jumpin at the Savoy."

Anybody know the details on it?
