I just got back from hearing the Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Calgary Jazz fest. Oh. My. God. But Don Vappi does some Creole french tunes. One he did tonight was, "Eh, le bas" or is that, "Et le bas"? He didn't spell anything out, but it's the creole expression for "Co...

The only two suggestions (other than Blossom Dearie) that I have aren't that great:

Pink Martini's Sympathique is one.
There is a guy in France who has a swing band and a website: Christophe Avril: http://www.jazzyaventure.com
It's not GREAT stuff, but the upside is that it IS in French.

Vinyl setups--playing, storing, etc.

I'm about to get into vinyl albums. There's a plethora of the stuff here; it's cheap, and I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that isn't available on CD. My problem is that I know next to nothing about LPs. So I'm looking to you gurus for advice on: 1) What should I look for when buying a turntable? 2) ...

Eva Cassidy's Wade in the Water and I forget the artist's name but I believe the song is called "Ice Cream Man"--not the Master P one, but the American folk tune one; these get played _every_ week (usually back to back) at one of the venues in town. I could listen to Wade in the Water over...

1. Diga Diga Diga - Duke Ellington
2. No Guitar Blues - Donald Ray Johnson
3. They Call Me Big Mama - Big Mama Thornton
4. My Baby Likes to Bebop - Ella Fitzgerald
5. Caldonia - Woody Herman

I think that might actually be a little bit over 15 minutes, by a few seconds.

I discovered Errol Garner by accident at at used CD store. Great stuff. Unfortunately, I left my playnotes at home and I'm in my office. The CD is called Errol Garner This is Jazz 13, though.

Playing the same musician twice?

...in particular, the same vocalist. What your limit? How many songs between? Obviously, this doesn't include theme nights like 'All Duke, All the Time'.

Cute, catchy. I like it. I take requests all the time. Our scene is small, so there's enough time for people to get their requests in and for me to play other more diverse stuff. Getting a request in once in a while makes people feel special--who am I to deny them that? I haven't run into the proble...

I'd probably feel similarly if everyone did it over here. But it doesn't happen very often.

I try to play lots of "familiar" stuff, mixed in with stuff that most people haven't heard and some "same" stuff (because here in Calgary, people still need their stand-bys and don't seem to get tired of them). If I have "familiar" alternatives to the "same", ...

It's not a swing song per se, but Simone rendition of, "Here Comes The Sun" is by far my favourite of her songs. "Ne me quitte pas" comes a close second.

True enough. I guess you'll always end up filling whatever you have--if you buy 60 GBS, you'll fill 60, if you buy 120, you'll fill 120...

I don't think I have a theme song, but I have been known to play the Sesame Street song, "Fuzzy and Blue". Otherwise, the Yalloppin' Hounds', "Oops, my bad" comes up a little more often than normal.

I bought a VAIO laptop last year (almost to the year now), and I've been extremely happy with it. My only beef now is that I'm running out of HD space at 30 GBs. I never used the Sonic Stage software--it was too much of a hassle to figure out properly and when I found out all it really does is ATRAC...

Well, it's all a toss up I suppose. The Pocketech 60GB drive is relatively tiny (5x3x0.5 in): $350 The Western Digital 120GB drive is not as tiny (8x6x1.5 in), but still small: $300.00, but with $50.00 rebate The SmartDisc 120GB drive is about the same size as the WD (8x5x1.5): $250.00 Ponder ponder...
