Most of Cole Porter and George Gershwin songs were originally written for shows. Some Examples from Cole Porter that you probably have some recordings of: "I Get A Kick Out OF You" From Anything Goes "It's All Right With Me" From Can Can "It's De- Lovely" From Red, Hot ...

He was the featured soloist on most of the Jackie Gleason recordings in the '50's. The tempos ranged from slow to reaaaaaaally sloooooow.

I've noticed I've been playing lots of songs that feature clarinet lately. Goodman, Shaw, Boilermakers, Edmund Hall, Eddie Shu, Albert Nicholas, Barney Bigard, etc etc. Don't know why or when it started. It's weird as I remember maybe 7-8 years ago distinctly hating clarinet. That's because clarine...

The guys who sang with Lunceford most of the time was trombonist Trummy Young. He also did some great vocals on some live cuts with Armstrong's All Stars in the '50's. One of the things that makes Honeysuckle Rose a great swing/ jazz tune is that the chord progression is set up perfectly for improvi...

My parents had a Mills Brothers LP when I was a kid- I literally wore it out! I love them to this day! But they are certainly NOT vocalese. They did imitate horns and solos and scat. But in the old style way. Vocalese as I understand it specifically refers to singers or groups setting words to famou...

Not to be critical.........

I think the second Fletcher Henderson recording of it with the Bone solo by JC Higgenbotham is the definitive one.

There is also a really hot live recording by Goodman's band of the same arrangement. I think I have it on the Ken Burn's jazz compilation.

There's a really happening version of it on the "Sinatra at the Sands" CD.

It's odd because Frankie does not sing- it is an instrumental by the Basie band featuring Al Grey with some nice plunger trombone. Definately danceable!

It was quite unfortunately played at a swing dance, and the DJ came running up to me to tell me how great a swing tune he thought it was. ugh.
