I reckon if you look at stars of the 1940s there must be a few still alive. I don't know if he counts as a 'major swing star', but I know Ray Anthony is alive ...

Re: Earl Hines Recommendations

Hey everyone, I've recently been getting into Earl Hines' material (great stuff) - well, at least the ones that aren't really scratchy or poor quality. I was wondering anyone if knew of some good (social dancing) Earl Hines tunes? Some of my favorites at the moment are: Rhythm Sundae, Up Jumped the...

I have decided that "Honeysuckle Rose" by Count Basie (1937 Decca), is the most perfect swing track* Which CD is that on trev? I have it on the cleverly-titled "Complete Decca Recordings": http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-Decca-Recordings-1937-1939/dp/B000003N3G (That's an exc...

Yeah it's pretty much only available on those Classics, which are not known for quality of sound. I was pining on twitter for a Willie Bryant remaster project, but he recorded so little, that it's most likely to be part of a retrospective of one of his musicians (if such a fantasy project were to a...

Bryant's music is great - it's the sound quality that lets it down for me.

Re: Help with an ID, Thanks in advance

I just saw this video of Ksenia Parkhatskaya and Max Pitruzzella dancing and liked the music playing, but I have no idea who it is by or what the name of the song is. Any ideas? Thanks for the help! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xew9hrzPMP8&feature=g-hist Like it … I don't know the music, but ...

Re: VJ'ing

I, uh, VJ'ed with video clips yesterday. It was an experiment of sorts--I know Alex in Seattle does, or did, this on a regular basis, but I had not tried it before. Playlist is below. Most of these you can find on Storyville DVD releases. It went reasonably well, but for next time, I'd like to find...

Rumour has it that a 1928-1946 Earl Hines set will be announced soon. I'm super excited about this as I have be pestering them with this suggestion for about 5 years. Finally some 30s Earl in (hopefully) decent fidelity! Earl Hines recorded some great numbers around c1939-1941. Like a big band vers...

Okay, a little more research (because my gut is telling me to follow the Carling Band or Gordon Webster path)... Google still has a snippet of text cached saying: "December 2008 Snowball Sweden 2008.12.31 ... - Gordon Webster http://www.gordonwebsterswings.com/CoAuthor/calendar.../calendar.xml...
