Three general rules I use when selecting a song:

- Never play anything I wouldn't dance to.
- Always play music I like.
- Try to play music the (current) crowd will like and will want to dance to (at the time).

Anything else is just a flexible guidline.

I have to agree with Harrison on the vocals, at least for the traditional Jazz stuff his voice doesn't doo much for me.

OTOH, the songs on the Capitol disc are more novelty songs. I think they're great and very beginner friendly. Not amazing Lindy Hop music but still fun.
I do use them sparingly.

What kind of Shag were the competing in? Most Carolina shaggers refer to their dance as simply shag (like WCS dancers usually just refer to it as swing). Carolina Shag has been popular with competitions for decades. Collegiate Shag and Carolina Shag are very different.

It shouldn't be too hard. I have it on the Chronologincal Classics ('35-'38), highly recomended if you like Webb's stuff.
