Gee Kevin, that seems like an odd situation. The few times I've been to Seattle, there was generally a pretty good crowd out dancing when you were spinning. I'm pretty sure I know the venue you are referring to and I'm sure the prime motivating factor in the decision process is getting paying custom...

In our remote and isolated scene, neo-swing was the popular music for Lindy when I started. My first significant exposure to "groove" and even classic swing was at Beantown 2001. It was definitely a different experience music wise. My first impression and same for other locals that had tra...

This is one something like one of the features I thought would be a benefit of moving to the web format. I agree that it will probably be difficult to get review contributions. There is also little need to duplicate what already exists on jivejunction. For this board, I would envision a slightly dif...

Three general rules I use when selecting a song:

- Never play anything I wouldn't dance to.
- Always play music I like.
- Try to play music the (current) crowd will like and will want to dance to (at the time).

Anything else is just a flexible guidline.

Hmm, I'm glad I haven't yet updated my credit card on fil with them yet (old one expired). I think they just convinced me not to bother, the value is not there anymore. Take the 4CD Goodman set they have. It would take more than two months on the basic plan to download all 89 tracks which would be a...

New CD Anti-piracy Scheme

It looks like one of the latest attempts at CD anti-piracy is a borderline waste of time. http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/10/08/Consumers/cd_shift031008 and http://www.msnbc.com/news/977144.asp?cp1=1#BODY It relies on the "autorun" feature of Windoze. For those of us who have that turned of...

Yeah, what Barb, Jesse and Reuben said :) Overall I really like the way the board has been going. The discussions have been great despite the occasional topic drift from music to local events. It's a great resource to come back to a month or six later to look up an album or artist recommendation. As...

Spin Around off the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack. Our other local DJ likes it.

Run ... fast ... get it now before someone else does! It's a great CD, I really like it. It's probably one of the best bang for the buck CD's I have. There's a great version of One O'Clock Jump by Goodman (I think Katie was asking about it in about it in another thread), I love Jamaica Jam and Rock ...

I have to agree with Harrison on the vocals, at least for the traditional Jazz stuff his voice doesn't doo much for me.

OTOH, the songs on the Capitol disc are more novelty songs. I think they're great and very beginner friendly. Not amazing Lindy Hop music but still fun.
I do use them sparingly.

What kind of Shag were the competing in? Most Carolina shaggers refer to their dance as simply shag (like WCS dancers usually just refer to it as swing). Carolina Shag has been popular with competitions for decades. Collegiate Shag and Carolina Shag are very different.

It shouldn't be too hard. I have it on the Chronologincal Classics ('35-'38), highly recomended if you like Webb's stuff.

I think I also saw it on one of the big band CDs at E-music ... just checked, it's on the Avid Classic Big Band Jazz compilation.

I caught a half of it tonight before the A's/Sox game came on.

I thought the pseudo-drama was distracting. There should have been either more drama or more documentary. Jazz (and Baseball) really set the standard for a documentary, in comparison Blues is disappointing.

Dave, I use Madonna's "Music" for West Coast swing. It's 120 BPM. "Get the Party Started" is another good example of high energy, slow tempo. It 130 BPM nobody's breaking a sweat, but if they like the music they're having a good time. Yeah, that stuff goes over fairly well. The ...
