We've had this discussion before, maybe it was on the old mail list.

Great album! As of Jan 2002 when I wrote my review, it was available as a Japanese import on Tower web site.

Yeah, I have the extra ones, too, and they aren't that great. They have a 50's R&B sound.

I actually wasn't that fond of the original tracks, either, it was a CD I kinda wished I hadn't bought.

Huh. I've never heard a song that I wouldn't play, but I haven't heard some of the ones you guys are talking about. But I probably wouldn't play something with ethnic putdowns or stereotypes. I'm all about playing swing songs about sex, though. Julia Lee has the most suggestive stuff, I've found. An...

I've always been a little surprised that blacks are so underrepresented in the Lindy Hop dance scene. I don't know enough about culture or demographics to speculate why. Not to mention that if one is not careful, any such speculation risks being offensive.

Songs with tempo changes should be played rarely, in my opinion. A dancer who goes out to dance to one tempo may get annoyed or feel awkward if it switches. That being said, "Bei Mir Bist Du whatever" from Swing Kids, the recently mentioned "Darktown Strutters Ball" by Alberta Hu...

More clips, how fun! When I judge it as "danceable" I really mean, "I would play for Lindy Hop dancers". My scale: Very Danceable, Danceable, Somewhat Danceable, Not Danceable. 1. Somewhat Danceable. But people probably wouldn't Lindy to it with that upbeat, traditional jazz feel...

Lots of good comments from everyone.

I think bands may have an advantage with gaps between the songs, but I think even bands can benefit by flowing their songs a bit. In other words, don't go from ballad to barnburner to ballad to barnburner.

I don't think "In the Mood" is worth a nomination as the worst swing song ever. Its bad, but there's so many worse songs. It's melody is inane, but catchy. However, the solos in the classic Miller version should win the award for the worst "jazz" solos ever.

No, I'm saying that his music is independent of the crimes he committed. And I'm not honoring him by playing his music, honor has nothing to do with it. I'm just playing music to entertain dancers. What if you find out that Artie Shaw was convicted for rape, for example, (and I'm just making this up...

Yes, that is a much better description.

Jerry- There's usually a lot of differing opinions by the DJs on this board about what makes a danceable song. But if I might take a risk at trying to speak for the group, most of the 50's big band songs you've put forward have been clearly deemed mediocre as dance songs at best, and its not just a ...

I'm surprised anyone would even bring it up as an "ethical dilemma". I'd say, play it, absolutely. And I'm surprised to hear DJs say they don't have his CD or if they have it, don't play it anymore. He's made excellent hi-fi versions of some classic songs--well worth playing.

He remastered the sound on the CD, as I mentioned in the first post. So does anyone have it, and find it better? Mr. Miner?

Jesse, you and I often have similar tastes, but LH&R isn't one of them. I just think they are OK.
