Re: Question about music history and development

CountBasi wrote:Are you sure it wasn't "taught the Henderson band how to swing" ?

For his part, Duke Ellington did talk about wishing he could have a Louis Armstrong in every seat in his band.
I'll check :)

Re: Question about music history and development

Probably unanswerable is a year when this started. You can hear it on earlier recordings like Don Murray's clarinet on Royal Garden Blues with Bix in 27. Anyway, Sidney Bechet was doing this (among who know how many others) before the first recordings were ever cut. (I've stuck steadfastly to your ...

Question about music history and development

Something I've been curious about for a while. I apologise that I don't have the terminology to describe this in musician's terms, because that would make it a lot easier to convey. The style that Artie Shaw uses in this solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6LrEkxolpk#t=1m41s where he plays with th...

Re: Private collection of Bill Savory

Helps to live in NYC. And to make contributions to the cause of the music. And to be devoted to it and know just about everything about it. And to be chatty with someone in the circle. Well - that's me stuffed then :( So how much have you heard? On a slightly different note, I asked the Mosaic guys...

Re: How to be a better Swing DJ

There's a few small points where I'd disagree - he puts great store in mp3 quality, bit-rates etc etc, but then states he uses his computer's on-board sound for his main output, and a Turtle Beach card for previewing... which (for any laptop I've ever encountered) will instantly lower the quality of...

[Answered] Business in F, Mora's Modern Swingtet

(it's the second song, around 4:10 in, after King Porter Stomp)

I really really should know this one, and it shames me that I can't place it.

Six partial clips from the Bill Savory collection- http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/08/17/arts/music/savory-collection.html Oh man, those clips are so tantalising. I especially loved the Lester and the Fats/Louis/Jack jam sessions. Ya. Love the Pres clip. This stuff has been 'in the news' si...

Re: Private collection of Bill Savory

Apologies if this has been posted already, but there's a great hour-long interview with Loren Shoenberg here: http://www.prx.org/pieces/64127-listening-to-the-savory-collection-with-loren-scho Loads of great sound samples, great interview. Thanks in advance!!
Sounds like Focus Pocus - title track from Glenn Crytzer's new album. Although it sounds like it's been slowed down a fair bit, without locking the pitch.

Mosaic currently have a 10% off sale, which encompasses a lot of the box sets - lasts until June 17th.

Not a massive discount, but it's tipped the balance - I'm just ordering me some Lunceford :)

In addition to the Hines set, which is on its way to me at the moment... so far I'm pondering Coleman Hawkins, Lunceford, Goodman, and Armstrong. If you don't already have it, might be worth checking out the Chu Berry set too. Got that one - it's amazing. And the Chick & Ella set will be a no-b...
