Re: How to be a better Swing DJ

I think the "Learn to love Swing" section is really important and I couldn't agree more. The only exception I'd make is Buddy Rich. I'd take Jimmy Crawford or Big Sid or Papa Jo or Cozy over Buddy or the less traveled Louis Barbarin. Regarding flow, I think it should be the norm but not ex...

Winamp users: winamp is no more

Last ever Winamp release was yesterday. There will be no new releases and the web site will be going away next month. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/11/20/winamp_to_disappear/ I'm running a now ancient version and it works just fine in my DJ set-up but it might be worth grabbing and saving a copy...

Ah, Walter T Higgs on harmonica. I like. His harmonica is nice and laid back, great tone and punctuation, a very Sonny Boy Williamson meets James Cotton inspired sound. Seems like he usually plays with a decent but unremarkable band, that's unfortunate.

Alva's Baby Blues is what he said, by Ray Sharpe. Here's another video featuring Mario Robau: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50FUohEQNow There's also a video of Myles and Tessa improvising to it. It shows up on lots of westie music top-n lists and forums. I hadn't heard of Ray Sharpe. I don't can't ...

Re: What was your worst djing experience?

After a few more times, the promoter yelled at me to turn the laptop down as I was 'overloading the sound system'. I think I tried turning the laptop output sound down, but whatever I did made little difference anyway as by this time, I couldn't get more than about 30 seconds of music to play at on...

Wow! I never would have guessed Kid Ory. It sounds way too slick and reserved.

Something I've noticed is the effect of more live music in the scene in recent years. Most of my out of town gigs at special events have been band breaks/end of the night or contest prelims. It's quite different than the old days when I could settle in for a 1-2 hour or longer shift. Even at PLEX ba...

I have noticed a difference on many recordings back when I started converting my collection from CD. I eventually settled on VBR encoding using lame with a medium quality setting (3 or 5, I forget which). Some of the scratchy old stuff effectively ends up at 128 or lower. Some of the better sounding...

My Turtle Beach got fried at our last dance and a replacement is on back-order. Has anyone used the Behringer UCA202 or UFO202?

We finally have our new gear. A pair of QSC K10s. Great clarity and lots of power. Worth spending substantially more than we budgeted. The K12 would have been nice but those are way more than we could afford right now. I can see some bass bins being necessary if we were playing different music. The ...

It's available on iTunes, I haven't found it on CD. It's a concert recording, there are a couple different ones. IIRC, the good one is 7:57, there's another around 7:36 that starts similarly but has some solos that wouldn't be good for a dance contest.

As long as there's nothing interfering with inserting the connectors or simply worn out connectors, I doubt that's your problem. I'd suspect a software problem on the computer. Make sure you have only the bare minimum software running when you're DJ'ing. Something as simple as your anti-virus softwa...

Thanks for the rapid followup and tips. We (the organizers) are upgrading from borrowing my single Mackie SRM150 I normally use for teaching classes to owning something bigger. The 150 is good enough for the space for 80% of the music we play. It fails when something has more bass than the 5" s...

Thanks straycat for confirming the marked difference in sound quality between the original SRM450s and the v2s. I still like my small SRM150s. For a mere 5" cone, they sound great for small spaces, classes, etc. I might have to pick up a spare in case they decided to make a SRM150v2. SoundInMot...

turin, what sort of tempo are you looking for? From your math I'm guessing something in the 180-240-ish range. I'd echo the hire a band sentiment. I have very little in my collection that swings in that tempo range and is that long. Most of what I have is live concert recordings with audience noise,...
