I haven't heard the album in the topic yet, but I do have a copy of the Branford Maralis Quartets's "Romare Bearden Revealed." Wynton appears on a few tracks... There is some nice blues on it, but I need to give it another listen to se if it would be worthwhile for a SwingDJ to acquire (do...

give him a cd to listen to in the car. encourage him to clap along... try to find the general beat, and hopefully he'll develop a sense for where 1 is... really i think immersion is the way to get through with someone having big problems finding the beat.

1. decent foxtrot song indeed. probably wouldn't play it unless the crowd was older and clearly wanted some foxtrot or smth. 2. I don't think I'd DJ this personally, but like if the band was there playing this -- I'd dance to it and I know others would, too. A lil' slow and ambling, though. 3. Hrm, ...

Did Benny Goodman have that drive when Harry James was with the band? Did Count Basie have that drive when Harry James played with him? I agree some of James' band stuff is fluff, some of it is better suited for ballroom than lindy hoppers (probably the majority), but there's plenty of stuff pre 195...

The Mosaic set has a lot of good stuff for dancing as well as listening. Bangtail (you gotta hear the whole song) is anything but loping, and is extremely danceable. The rhythm section may not be on par as Basie's around 1940, but as you pointed out, nothing reaches that level. All of the danceable ...
