Is anyone else crazy enough to...

... scan the liner notes for their entire collection? I've stored them as .jpg images and when appropriately named are fairly easy to locate on the computer. My naming convention is: Lastname Firstname Albumtitle (enough to recognise) Pagedescriptor example: Fitzgerald Ella Dukes Place 1.jpg = cover...

When the LCJO came to Minneapolis/St. Paul years ago, several of them came over and jammed with local musicians at our weekly Thursday night dance at Tapestry. I drove several of them over myself! Wynton was even there for a while. I think I remember one or two of the Lincoln Center guys attempting ...

Were Basie or Ellington good Lindy Hoppers? Did Artie Shaw do Bal?
From "Dizzy - The Life and Times of John Birks Gillespie" (p. 210):
Ella was an excellent dancer, and on late night visits to local clubs, she and Dizzy would dazzle everyone with their atheletic Lindy Hopping.

Swingin' Miles Davis!

Except for it being seven minutes long, "All Of You" from Miles Davis' 1956 album 'Round About Midnight really swings and could be DJed! Anyone ever try it? Nice Red Garland piano solo. And a young Coltrane on sax.

The Rhythm Hot Shots used to do this routine to this music. Maybe they still do? I'm out of the scene so dont even know if they still exist.

I really wish I had listened to as much of their (Basie/Ella) music then as I had now since I don't think I really appreciated it as much as I would have now Ain't it the truth.... I pretty uniformly wrote off classic big band and vocal standards as too boring back then. I remember how we'd all gro...

I remember Akiyoshi/Tabackin from the 80s. Quite tight is how I remember them. My LP disappeared also long ago. I envy you seeing them in person and also Buddy Rich (was it you who posted you went all the time to see him live?) I've read many of your posts that always make me think we must have had ...

Amazon.com "error"?

Ever get something you didn't order, but is really cool and you want to keep anyway? I ordered "Trumpet Kings at Montreux" (Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry), but they sent me "Steel Guitar Jazz" (Buddy Emmons). Of course I will be correcting the error because I want th...

I think the dancing solo to swing music "scene" is huge but you have no way of measuring it because people don't get together do it. I'm gonna go do some right now in fact. To Clark Terry and Oscar Peterson. Sometimes I don't dance the whole songs, only the sections I really like. Oops, th...

One of the other DJs here just recommended Best of Odyssey 1945 to 1952 to me... is anyone familiar with it? Tina 8) I love this album! I love Dizzy! This is a good compilation as it gets him in small groups, in big band and even with strings. Am I alone in that I love the "with strings" ...

Anyone else here like this group? DJed em? They always have incredible bands backing em, especially on the album Sing, Sing, Sing.

And it goes on and on and on ...

A lot of the music I like is modern jazz where a song will start out really strong but have several extended solos that go on seemingly forever. A) Where do you guys come down on fading a song out after the first 5 minutes or so ... B) Have you ever edited a song by removing a solo or two? Am I talk...
