Define "better". As far as signal to noise, I highly doubt that a completely mechanical recording setup will work better than an electronic one. A condenser microphone is EXTREMELY sensitive to small pressure changes, but those changes are only detectible by transforming the motion into an...

The last track on "Mr. Jelly Lord" by Wynton Marsalis is a duet of trumpet and ... um, some rhythm instrument, I forget what recorded on a wax cylinder. It sounds exactly like an old recording ... minus the scratches. It's pretty awesome.

What's the lineup and instrumentation? I can't seem to find that on a cursory look-through of the link.

I realize it's probably a braino, but the idea of an actual town named "Dance Sport" just slays me.

i felt sorry for them after the 7 minute mark, but I just couldn't bring myself to cut it, and they couldn't bring themselves to just stop! I've danced all the way through Ellington's Dimuendo and Crescendo in Blue Live At Newport (16 minutes, I think). Twice. I was feeling pretty creatively dead e...

Ah, another note about long songs (since Nathan mentioned not subjecting dancers to eight minute songs). I seem to recall somewhere (maybe it was me asking an oldtimer directly) that when a band went on too long during a song, it was perfectly acceptable to stop dancing by mutual agreement and go fi...

Dude, if I thought a band sucked, I'd complain to the event director. If I hired them, I'd damn well tell them. I would hope that that band wouldn't have been hired in the first place. I would hate to be an artist and have someone come up and tell me what to do, but I realize that most jazz musicia...

I don't care whether or not "shiny stockings" was written as a dance tune; I love dancing to it. Why would I want someone to control that choice for me? But aren't you controlling that choice when you edit part of a song out? You're making the decision whether that part of the song is 'da...

When an artist presents a published product, it may not be his intended final artistic statement, but not every jazz musician is George Lucas. If I am hearing a live band and they play a lot of inappropriate music for dancing, I am not going to go up to them and tell them their music needs editing, ...

I can't help but mention that it pains me to hear that DJs edit songs. I feel, somehow, that it's disrespectful. Also, if the song has parts that aren't that great for dancing, would you think it was intended for dancing in the first place? I certainly would feel a big loss if someone cut out sectio...

If I were super-motivated I would put all yehoodi DJ playlists into a spreadsheet and then find out what the most popular song to spin is.

Instead, I'll let someone else do it.

You can hear the rhythm in any good swing drummer's solos. You can hear the MELODY in a GREAT swing drummer's solo. Try humming the melody of a song along with the drummer the next time one solos ... you might be surprised. More modern drumming chops up the beat a hell of a lot. It's flashier and t...
