Re: Favourite recording of Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho?

I know of the Bechet version, which is awesome. AHA! That's the Bechet song that I ... well, I really hate dancing to it. The melody seems really, really square the way he plays it. It somehow reminds me of a Jewish wedding (if that's not too un-PC to say). I always wondered what that song was.

I routinely tell people that good swing is like 1930's house music - that same relentless thumping four on the floor. With reference to the above, how would you compare these two tracks - Don't Be That Way by Jimmy Dorsey The Dipsy Doodle by Willie "The Lion" Smith The first I would consi...

...and that is why I at the moment have all my cd's ripped into lossless compressed files, with all metadata, as artist, album, year etc (and my own inserted bpm's and comments etc), which I have on my main hard drive, and then I have a backup of that on an external hard drive, now that hard drive ...

A collection of .wav files on disc in addition to the original CDs stored safely provides a backup of each there is bit rot on the disc, I have the copy on disc. If there is bit rot on the disc, I have the CD to re-rip. If both get destroyed, there is always the option of re-purchasing. You need a ...

Lawrence: I can't quite remember for sure but I seem to recall that if I just reburn all the wav files onto the CD in the right order, the online databases recognize the CD and shoot me all the track information again.

As far as backing up original CDs losslessly I wonder if anyone just copies a disk image onto hard drives? To recover a lost CD you'd just burn the .iso (or whatever, I'm fuzzy on the terminology) to a new CD. Does that work? Is it easier? Obviously it doesn't save as much space as ripping to FLAC.

I don't know why so many people go to the extra, unnecessary step of saving a WAV file, and THEN compressing to an MP3 file to create this issue, in the first place. The tedious part of ripping for me is inserting the CDs into the drive a thousand times or more. If I rip to a lossless format such a...

I just bought an external Live! for $40 (used). I have no idea if I got ripped off or not. The sad part is that I don't even really have a use for it (except maybe to rip old cassette tapes).

Maybe someday I'll even buy a laptop.

I was bummed that you didn't have your DJ'ing laptop with you in New Orleans. Regis would have been making a guest appearance in some of your next few DJ sets.

To be honest, I never shop anywhere except Amoeba and Louisiana Music Factory (which is in New Orleans). The jazz section in Amoeba is so incredibly well-stocked (both used and new) that I always walk away with enough music to tide me over until the next time I happen to be in the neighborhood. They...

I actually love a lot of L, H, and R, but I also happen to agree with Paul that the arrangements tend to be kind of stiff. The problem is that they are recreating someone else's music almost note for note, which leaves little room for rhythm and timing of their own. It has to be really tight, otherw...

Both albums are worth getting, although not all the music is great for dancing. The vibe on the albums are what really grab you -- just loose, spontaneous, somewhat unrehearsed, just like it would have been in Kansas City in the 30s.

Ella Live in Berlin

Pretty pyrotechnic (again, not great for dancing at all). Also, her pianist for that gig (and for many years) was Paul Smith who is the next closest thing to Art Tatum alive today. I saw him live at the Hollywood Park Casino and it was, uhhh...kind of mindblowing.

I like the Kansas City soundtrack version. The opening notes are slightly out of tune and disjointed, like the band is really relaxed and having fun.
