no one is denying Basie's KC bona fides, just pointing out that you have to consider a person's entire life. Basie didn't go west until he was in his 20's. and how old was Ellington when he moved or Cab, or Fletcher or Redmen..etc.... And if his mentors were guys like Fats Waller, that squarely put...

[ I think the only Critiera would be where the band or musician was Billed from or Claimed. Basie never claimed or was Billed as from Harlem. He claimed he was from Red Bank, New Jersey. And his roots was New York stride piano which definitely makes him an East Coaster. And that's why i asked about...

shouldn't that be the focus of this event... Harlem Jazz? Just a reminder...this is the Harlem Jazz Dance Festival, an event recognizing Harlem's gift of Lindy Hop Your 100% correct, however the event has in fact slightly changed from what Janice originally intended , as far as the Harlem Music in ...

When I hear "Count Basie" the first thing I think of isn't "Harlem"... instead I think "Kansas City." I'm with you on this one. It's not as though I'd go to and event promting the contributions of Kansas City and play a bunch of Chick Webb. Admittadly I did use a Basie...

Basie played more in Harlem than he did in Kansas City. He had a summer-long gig at the Famous Door*, but when he was BASED in KC, his band was a territory band that played one-nighters all over the midwest. That is grossly incorrect....more in Harlem then KC? not even close.... a summer long gig i...

A reliable source only confirmed that he did it with advance notice when the reliable source, not that it was being done surreptitiously when others were DJing. :) Doing it surreptitiously is the bad, sneaky part of it. I witnessed an event do it without asking, they just had it all hooked up and w...

(or composers) ...of course this leaves the door open for a whole slew of interesting loop holes. practically anything under the sun can be "connected" in some way or another to Harlem. I look forward to see which DJ's stand out in doing their homework and acually play music considered fr...

I think some people have gotten caught up in the letter of the request rather than the spirit in which it was written. Well, some of the DJ's involved have the knowledge to question the intent. This event was first all about Harlem, when it was first brought up , it was about the history of Harlem a...

Fine point Rayned. Furthermore, experienced dancers tastes don't necessarily coincide with the majority of the crowd. GOOD POINT. and it's very important to include the better dancers. because not only will they they be there time and time again, but in alot of scenes it's the better dancers that d...

It's kinda depressing that "swing DJ's" would ignore some of the greatest musicians that ever lived because of "recording quality". especially because the reason tended to be because of race. Not sharing or exposing these artist to the swing community as a swing DJ continues to l...

Re: What are we missing?

How much of the older music has been digitized? Is there anything in particular that you'd like to see made available on CDs? Tons of stuff was transferred at one point from the original recorded 78 plates to LP during the 50's,60's etc...so when looking for rare stuff it's best to search for the L...

I know that some might prefer later swing music, but I've yet to come across a DJ that won't touch original era jazz. I live to see the day you let one of these comments go unsaid. it's said but it is true. the most common excuse for not playin 1930's music is because it was not recorded in good en...
