Just in case it matters, Terry is on a Windows machine. And sorry Terry, I thought there was such a topic on here. I could swear I read something on the topic once, I guess I was mistaken. Wouldn't it be tougher to preserve ratings if he swaps the internal hard drive? In that case you can't depend o...

I don't imagine my opinion counts for much, but to a first order of approximation I'd say "yes, it's bad". As a DJ it's not my place to try to teach the dancers a lesson or otherwise diminish the dancers' enjoyment at any moment of the evening. I'm there for three complementary purposes: t...

Yes you can have both running and preview from iTunes. Just make sure the system sound output device, which will be used by iTunes, matches up with the preview sound device as set in Disco XT. Anyone tried the Disco XT 5.x series yet? I'm pretty happy with 4.x, and am loathe to shell out for the upg...

What I'd like to figure out is how to get people to not Shim Sham to Tuxedo Junction.

Exactly what Matthew said. My first thought was Sway , probably the version done by the Pussycat Dolls, though honestly I prefer Dean Martin's rendition. As far as the Gotan Project, I'm guessing their big hit was Santa Maria which was played during one of the dance scenes in Shall We Dance? (Richar...

Here's the scary thing: There really are that many possible controls and ways that things could go wrong except for the mute buttons, which after reviewing the interface once I got home, don't exist.

If I remember correctly, the Disco XT demo stops sending sound after something like 15 minutes in a session, and this might be what's happening. Make sure to completely exit Disco XT, not just close the main window (the distinction being the one major part of the Apple UI that I dislike). Then resta...

I'm pretty sure Disco XT doesn't have a continuous live headphone preview shuffle. That said, there's nothing to prevent you from using iTunes for the shuffle previewing (just set the system sound output to go to the desired interface for your headphones, and DiscoXT to use a seperate interface for ...

I'm not sure what "plays songs at random from an iTunes Playlist of my choice" means. I can interpret that either as "Has a DJ preview mode that does shuffle playback on a playlist" (which would be kind of weird) or "Allows me to preview songs of my choice from playlists&quo...

I think the first thing to do in general is to become familiar with how different frequencies are perceived, and the manner in which different instruments "use" these frequencies. An article such as http://www.digitalprosound.com/2002/03_mar/tutorials/mixing_excerpt1.htm can be helpful in ...

A follow-up regarding Disco XT after my less-than-glowing comments earlier. I used version 4.8.1 last night to DJ a 3.5 hour gig. It made it through the night without a hiccup. At this point I think I'm happy with the software once again. I was going a bit easy on it, as I had planned out most of th...

Well, kind of a moot point since the thing has been out of production for years, but the first MP3 player I owned was a Rio Karma, and to me it's still the best I've used as far as the usability is concerned. As good as the iPod is, I often find it frustrating to use, particularly when it comes to p...

If you're having problems with shredding material, you might try getting ahold of the parts department for your headphone manufacturer. I recently replaced the cord and some other innards of a pair of Fostex T40-RP headphones, and the parts were surprisingly affordable. I'm not sure if Sony would be...

Not really a swingin' version, but on iTunes I found a recording by "Peg Leg Sam" (album Early In The Morning) that I haven't yet tired of listening to. It might work for a blues dance or other low-key situation.

Ah yes. Katamari. How did that play over? Well, given that I considered it a novelty song for the evening, I held out until late in the evening when the crowd was already pretty thin and in "wind down mode", thus I'm not sure I have a representative sample to go by. It seemed to go about ...
