Re: Narvin Kimball: Ninety and Still Delivering

This album kicks butt. Recorded live in 1999 at Yoshi's in Oakland (one of the best jazz clubs in the world) and therefore has impeccable sound. Narvin on banjo, Paul Cosentino on Piano, Evan Christopher on clarinet, bass, trombone, trumpet, drums. A little pre-swing, songs are on the long side, bu...

When he sang St. Louis Blues on that album I thought it was one of the younger guys until I looked at the liner notes. He really sounded like he was 30.

I didn't know you played pianna too. That's pretty cool.

Barrett Deems: Deemus

If you like clarinet and drums and some rippin' guitar, check out the album "Deemus" by Barrett Deems, who was Louis Armstrong's All-Star drummer (and is mentioned by name in Now You Has Jazz). It was recorded in 1978 and, well, the musicianship is outstanding. Picked this up for $2.99 at ...

From my long-ago garage band days I recall a piece of equipment called the BBE Aural Exciter which was used on most major studio albums of the day (well, at the time I listened primarily to heavy rock and metal). No magazine could pin down exactly what it did, but speculation ranged from boosting hi...

I like the songs fine, I was just amused at "we wouldn't ordinarily do this BUT..."

Just messin' with him. Jonathan knows I dig his band.

In general I don't object to people making money from artistic endeavors. I wish it would happen more often.

I have a drum instruction book by Gene Krupa which tells you to play hi-hats in a way that emphasizes the 1 and 3. Hadn't realized that more modern jazz accents the 2 and 4 on the ride/hi-hat pattern until you pointed it out.

Subtle stuff really makes a huge difference in feel.

The A section of Willow Weep For Me has an overall major tonality although parts of the chord progression imply a minor key. The B section has an overall minor tonality. It is coolly ambiguous about the major/minor key, which I think is a key feature of blues, and which makes Willow Weep For Me a bl...

I'm not flaming anyone, I'm observing that maybe the tracks would be usable for someone else. Sorry if it came off that way.

As far as jazz books, everyone should read "Reading Jazz", which is a thousand page collection of excerpts from other jazz books.

Everyone's tolerance for noise defect removal is different. As a listener, I would prefer to hear crackles and pops and hiss plus frequencies from the instruments in that range instead of a clean, but dulled version. On a lot of old, badly remastered tracks you cannot hear cymbals at all because the...

Just out of curiosity, have any of you ever DJed a dance/event with some of the oldtimers (Dawn, Frankie, Norma, etc.) and asked them afterwards what they thought about the music? I can't decide if they'd be brutally honest or polite, and also I'd be interested in hearing what their evolution in mus...

Maybe we could record the JSO at, um, some live event. You know, that one.
